"Surgeons are detail-oriented. We like statistics and checklists and operating procedures. Our patients live because we enjoy following the steps but as much as we love to always rely on the numbers, The plan, we also know that some of the greatest medical discoveries have happened by accident. Mold: Penicillin. Poisonous tree bark: a cure for Malaria, a little blue pill for high blood pressure, impotence be damned. It's hard for us to accept that it's not always the hard work or attention to detail that will get us the answers we are looking for. Sometimes we just have to sit back, relax and wait for a happy accident. No matter how many plans we make or steps we follow, we never know how our day is going to end up. We'd prefer to know, of course, what curveballs will be thrown our way. It's the accidents that always turn out to be the most interesting parts of our day, of life. The people we never expected to show up, the turn of events we never would have chosen for ourselves. All of a sudden you find yourself somewhere you never expected to be and it's nice, or it takes some getting used to. Still, you know you'll find yourself appreciating it somewhere down the line. So you go to sleep each night thinking about tomorrow, going over your plans, preparing the lists, and hoping that whatever accidents come your way will be happy ones"

"love's a fragile little flame. it could burn out"

Derek entered the hospital to find a bunch of interns laughing outside an on-call room door. He shooed them away before opening the door to see Mark and a drug rep in a compromising position. "Dude!" Mark exclaimed. "Why is this my morning?" Derek sighed. Kelly came up behind him, startling him. "What are you looking at?" she asked. "Nothing"

She pushed past him and saw Mark and the drug rep. Mark's face fell and she scoffed. "Fucking typical", she muttered. "Good morning, Derek, Dr Sloan". She walked off. Derek glared at Mark before walking off as well.

Aurora was enthusiastically telling Owen about her surgery the previous night when she saw him look regretfully at Teddy. "You can be her friend. I never asked you not to be", she said, stroking his cheek. "So be her friend".

"Thank you"

She smiled and he kissed her before Charles interrupted. "Dr Hunt, I just paged you", he said. "Happy working", Aurora smiled before entering the hospital.

Cristina and Beck were in the ER when an old man was wheeled in on a stretcher with Jackson by his side. Cristina tried to take over with Beck tailing her. "Tell this lady to back off, Jackie", the man said to Jackson. "Jackie", Beck snickered, looking at Jackson who rolled his eyes. "Whatever", Jackson said. "Look, I already paged Bailey. He's not cardio so you two can lose interest". "We'll see about that", Cristina said. "I already lost interest", Beck said, about to walk away. "Sir, I'm a surgeon. A very good one", Cristina said. "So is my grandson so can you get your hands off me?" the man asked.

"He's your grandfather?"

Beck lingered, her interest slightly piqued. "I can handle this till Bailey gets here", Jackson said. "No, you're not allowed to treat family members", Cristina argued. "He has midepigastric tenderness and guarding. It could be ascending cholangitis". "Ascending cholangitis? Really?" the man asked. "With only one of the symptoms of Charcot's triad?"

"You're a doctor?"

"Apparently a much better one than you are. Dr Harper Avery. And your name, doctor?"

"And my interest is back", Beck said, rushing back over. "Harper Avery?" Cristina questioned. "No, that's my name", Avery said. "As in the Harper Avery Award?" Beck asked.

"Bingo. Get some new surgeons, Jackie. One with a pulse this time"

"Okay, you're rude"

"You're Harper Avery's grandson?" Cristina exclaimed. Jackson sighed.
