Chapter Nine: Sandrine

Wyn's P.O.V.

I sat on the tree branch, hugging my knees against my chest. I'd only been up for less than two hours, and the day was already a disaster. Discovered I had some weird dark powers, ran away, and hurt a wolf that was trying to kill me. Being an animal lover, that meant something to me.

So many questions were going through my head. Why me? Why did I have to get uncontrollable powers only a week after my mother's death? What were these powers, anyway? Would Adam and Alesa even care that I was gone? And most importantly; what now?

The wind the blowing hard. I tried to shift my weight and move my legs into a different position. But the heavy wind, shaking branch and trembling me changed the outcome. I fell off the tree branch and fell on the ground with a thunk. I groaned. More tears started fell down my pale and wet face.

I was in so much pain, I couldn't even move for two minutes straight. The pain didn't fade as I stood up. I had probably broken a bone or two. I only took three steps before I collapsed. Black tears fell down my face until there were two tears left. My skin was wet, cold and cut up. I stared up at the cloudy sky, breathing heavily.

Is this my new life? I thought. I'd rather be dead than live like this!

The pain finally came to a point were I could stand. I couldn't walk or run; just limp. The ground was covered with a thin white layer. The forest was practically lifeless. I was alone. Everything was still.

And I hated it.

Suddenly, I heard the cocking of a gun from behind me. I quickly turned around. There was a guy peaking out from behind a bush. He had a large ginger beard and brown hair. His clothes were camouflage. And he was pointing a rifle at me.

My eyes widened. The man shot the gun. It barely missed my neck. I ran away as fast as my hurting feet would let me. My heart started pounding. I hid behind a large tree. I could hear the man's breathing and footsteps.

"Where are you, child?" he shouted. It was clear he was a smoker. "You little child of darkness! Where are you?"

My eyes widened. How did he know? Did he see me? Or could he just tell?

I tried to stay silent. But my heay breathing gave me away. The man walked around the tree and looked at me. A smile formed on his face.

"After years of hunting," he said, grinning now. He pointed the gun at me.

I tried to back away, but I tripped over a rock. I wanted to get right back to my feet. I wanted to run and scream ad cry. But the pain was too much. I couldn't move.

I closed my eyes tight. Get it over with, I thought.

Suddenly, there was the sound of growling. The man screamed. I opened my eyes and forced myself to sit up. A wolf had attacked the man, and was tearing him to shreds; literally. My tired eyes became wide.

It was the wolf from earlier. The one I hurt.

I could see the damage on his paw. It wasn't awful, but it was still dead. The wolf walked over to me. He smiled. I forced a smile back .

"T-thanks for saving me," I said. "I'm sorry for hurting you earlier."

The wolf came closer to me. I expected him to bite me. Instead, he licked my face. I laughed, and started petting him. His tail started wagging.

"I'm Wyn!" I said, grinning. "Do you have a name? Wait, you can't talk. Can I give you a name?"

He nodded, then yipped.

"Hm... I'll name you, Sandrine! Because you defended me, and Sandrine is a Greek name that means Defender.... I think."

Sandrine licked my face. I giggled. "You like it?" I asked. He nodded. I smiled.

"Wyn!" I heard a voice say.

Oh no.
