"Seems like you still got it." My dad says as I wind the bait around the hook skillfully."I had the best teacher." I say with a small smile before I throw it out into the lake. Thankfully I could convince him to let me use one of his spare rods and leave the pink one at home. He wasn't really fond of that but Daisy swiped in to my aid convincing him magically.
In the beginning it was weird watching her interact with him so naturally but he loves her. He took her under his house and treated her like he treated me, like a daughter. And I can see that Daisy needed that, I know her dad wasn't the best and I'm actually thankful that she has the luck to experience a good relationship with a father figure.
"I'm happy you decided to join me, we didn't see much of each other these last weeks." He speaks up and I turn my head to look at him while he focuses on his rod.
"Why didn't you ask me?" I ask and he shrugs his shoulders.
"I know what you think of Dana and this whole house. I knew you needed time to adjust, you miss your mom, I hear you talking to her every night. I don't want that anything changes for you." His words make me realize that he wasn't being distant. He was doing what he thought was right.
"But everything has changed." I speak up not really knowing what to say.
How can you expect to stay everything the same when your parents get divorced and your father decides to marry a new wife? I'm happy it happened when I got to college so I didn't have to see much of it but it hurt nonetheless.
He doesn't speak up and I know what I said was wrong. How could I blame him for everything changing? My parents decided on a mutual agreement that they would divorce each other.
No ones at fault. I know that.
"You're right I don't like Dana. But that's not important because I love you. I want you to be happy and have a new life. I couldn't bear to see you moping around unhappy after what happened between you and mom. Nobody is at fault, especially not you. You were always a great dad, you still are. I am the one who behaved like a brat, never coming over the holidays not giving Daisy a chance."
"I'll doubt she'll hold you to that. She's in awe of you." He says chuckling lightly and I smile nodding.
I look at the familiar blue eyes of my dad who shine at me warmly.
"She is great. She's a really good person and I hope the wedding is going to be like she imagines it because she deserves it." I say and I know I mean it.
"She really is. Ryland and her will be happy." He says a knowing look in his eyes and I nod before I stare out into the lake.
That was a heavy start of a conversation, I hoped we could dwell in memories first before I have to get the hard parts over.
"Are you?" He speaks up again and I turn my head surprised looking at him.
"Am I what?"
"Happy."
"Of course I am why wouldn't I be?" I ask and he gives me a concerned look.
"You're dedicated to your studies and have spend the last five years on college without, a distraction, a friend.." he says unsure and I smile.
"Ian is my friend."
"I know he is and I'm glad you two are still in touch but I mean someone who's not from the Williams family." His words surprise me more than they should.
"Is there a problem with the Williams family?"
"Of course not but I believe they are the thing..that keeps you from having other friends." His cheeks tint red and I break out into laughter not even able to be angry with him.
