They were having dinner when Hanji's phone rang for the third time that night. Erwin didn't bother looking up from his computer. He needed to finish putting together a PowerPoint for his class. He had been so behind with teaching for the past few months that he swore he might have been getting some grey hairs at the early age of 24 from worrying.
Nobody had told him that being a teacher in your early twenties was easy. Especially when you were teaching High school students. The teens seemed to think that since the age gap between their teacher and themselves wasn't that large that Erwin would be a cool teacher and let them get away with anything.
Hanji signed and picked up the phone and left the kitchen. Win could faintly hear Hanji's annoyed tone as they asked what the caller needed at this time of night.
It had been almost 2 months since everything with Levi. Erwin had moved back into the house and Hanji had been staying with him because apparently, nobody wanted him to be alone. Levi had moved to Utah to live with Nan and Miche for a while. Other than that Erwin really hadn't heard anything about the raven. Not that he wanted to anyway.
Erwin went back to typing, trying to fit as much information as he could on every slide, and even took a few extra seconds to find pictures that could help explain what he was going over on the slide. He doubted the teens would appreciate it but at this point, he didn't really care. They were stuck in his History class whether they liked it or not.
He heard Hanji saying their goodbyes and thank you's to ever was on the phone as he opened his email. He had one email from a student about the test Friday. He quickly hit the respond button and tried his very best to explain what the student needed to study. Hanji walked back into the kitchen looking even more exhausted than they did earlier.
"I think he might actually be trying Erwin," Hanji said as they set their phone down on the kitchen table.
Erwin turned his attention away from his computer to look at them and raise an eyebrow. The scientist shrugged their shoulders and fell into a chair, flinging their glasses off. The glasses slid down the table with an odd noise. Erwin watched as his friend rubbed their temples. It was obvious that despite how happy Hanji had been earlier, they had had a rough day as well.
"Nan said that he's been doing rehab," They stated. "Miche said that he's gotten a pretty good stable job too."
"He'll run right back-" Erwin started but Hanji slammed their hand down on the table.
"God damnit Erwin," They growled.
"There is no point in getting excited Han," Erwin looked back at his computer. "He'll run right back to Zeke in a few weeks. Watch."
"Levi is halfway across the country getting help, trying to get better for us and you are sitting here being an asshole." Hanji snarled.
Erwin was quiet before he started typing his email to his student once more. He didn't want to have this discussion. Not now at least. He had a bad day at work and then had to deal with his phone being blown up by Isabel and Farland. Even Mikasa, Levi's younger cousin, had blown up his phone. They had all demanded the same thing. Text Levi back.
"He is doing it without support," Hanji whispered.
"He has Nan and Miche, his siblings too," Erwin responded.
"God damnit Erwin, listen to me, " Hanji yelled.
Erwin sighed through his nose and closed his laptop. Swallowing his anger as he looked at his friend of twenty years. You would that being friends for so long Hanji would catch on that Erwin didn't want to have this conversation. Hanji was the type of person though who made sure it was talked about even if you didn't want it to be brought up. That's what had drawn Erwin to them at a young age.
"I was there for him when he was at his lowest Hanji and yet when I was falling and needed help he chose the drugs over me. The one time I needed help he didn't choose me." Erwin stood from his chair. "I love Levi and I'm so proud of him for trying to get better but Han, what he did was unforgivable."
He went to leave the kitchen only to see Hanji scramble from their seat. Out of the corner of his eyes, he almost saw them fall down as tripping over their own feet. But their cold hands reached out just in time and grabbed tightly onto his Bicep. Hnaji held his arm the same way Levi had months ago. Erwin stood and waited for what Hanji had to say. He watched them take a deep breath, try to collect themselves.
"He did help you, Erwin, you were just so far gone that you don't remember." They breathed.
"I layed on that bathroom floor for hours, Han ." He whispered.
"Levi was the one to call me, to call the police," Hanji confessed. "When I got there he was panicking and I-I told him to wait outside."
Erwin ripped his arm from Hanji's grip and tried to walk away before they grabbed him again, this time by the shirt. He sighed and looked down at them. They were crying silent tears as they gripped his shirt.
"Despite everything he's done, some part of you has to know that he loves you."
He didn't answer. He was too tired to have this conversation, too fragile. He knew that it was better to believe that Levi had never loved him than to believe that he really had lost the boy who loved him.
"No." Was Erwin's only reply before he walked away once more. Hanji didn't stop him this time. They only stood in the hallway and watched as he walked away from them.
