Fault

Emily didn't know why it was her fault. It didn't surprise her that everyone was making it her fault, but it wasn't. It wasn't her fault that Eldon had broken up with her thirty seconds before their finals routine so he could be with Michelle.

She had seen it coming. It was the way he had acted around her since she came back from Elite, the way he avoided her. And it was the way he looked at Michelle. The way he went out of his way to talk to her, the way he smiled at her in rehearsals, the way he put so much time into their duet. It had been worse at regionals. He had hugged her after every round they won. He had told her she looked beautiful. Meanwhile, she had felt his awkwardness when he tried to comfort her after her conversation with Amanda.

She hadn't wanted them to be the focus of the regionals dance. For their duet to be the focus. She had already been suspicious that there was something going on between the two of them. And then Eldon had finally admitted it to her. That he didn't like her anymore, that he wanted to be with Michelle. And she had danced the finals routine with a broken heart. She had to pretend Michelle was still her friend, because they were still co-captains. She didn't know why Michelle would think they're friends, when she had stolen her boyfriend.

The regionals victory was ruined for her. Knowing that her boyfriend loved someone else. Her ex boyfriend now. She had spent all her time since regionals in her room, doing nothing. Except thinking about them. It had hurt so much. Her family didn't even care. Riley didn't care. And she would never tell Riley how she felt because honestly, she thought Riley might side with Michelle. Like she did all the times in the lead up to regionals. Why would she trust Riley with this, when Riley had let her down all those other times.

She didn't know Michelle and Eldon were keeping their new relationship a secret. She thought that they had told everyone. She was afraid that everyone was laughing at her, because she had been replaced by Michelle, again. She didn't want everyone to think she was upset. So she congratulated the couple. She knew it came out forced and fake but she never meant it to. She knew she shouldn't have mocked Michelle and Eldon like that, but that speech was the hardest she had ever had to make. She could hear everyone laughing. And then came the whispers. How she was just starting drama again. How Michelle was better suited to Eldon than her. How Eldon and Michelle were such a great couple.

She could hear the mocking comments thrown her way, and slowly felt herself break inside. Because Eldon had meant so much to her. And then he had essentially cheated on her with Michelle, emotionally anyway. But it didn't matter. Because to everyone else it wasn't Eldon's fault. It wasn't even Michelle's fault. It would always be hers.

Okay but it annoyed me so much that when Emily announced that Eldon and Michelle were dating - and she didn't even know they were keeping it a secret, she thought everyone knew - and then everyone said she was just causing drama again!!! Like Eldon pretty much cheated on her with Michelle, but it's Emily's fault? Like, come on everyone, stop siding with Eldon, he is obviously the bad guy in this situation. Anyway, 🎶 thank you for coming to my ted talk 🎶
