The vehicle drove along the highway at a relatively slow pace, the teenage girl and the older male sitting in the back, the only two occupants of the vehicle, other than the driver. The teenage girl sat in silence, sniffling, still reeling from the sudden breakup. The older man sitting beside her, offering silent comfort.
'Your mascara is running,' Slade said softly, offering Thea Queen a handkerchief, which she took and dabbed at her eyes to stop it running.
'Thank you,' she said quietly.
'Are you all right?' the older man asked, as sympathetic as he could be with an ulterior motive and a gruff voice.
'It's my boyfriend. Ex-boyfriend now. He just, completely out of nowhere, decides to end things.' The older man sat, listening keenly.
'Heartbreak is something I know all too well,' Slade said, a slight smile gracing his lips. 'Not an easy thing to recover from.' There was silence for a moment before he added. 'And sometimes you never do.' They pulled up outside a dimly lit area in front of a chain link fence.
'Um, we're not at - This isn't my home,' Thea stuttered, sinking back into the seat in fear, staring at the older man, whose nice facade had completely faded.
'You're not going home, Thea,' he said, meeting eyes with her in a cold gaze. He turned his gaze ahead again. 'Get out,' he said. When she didn't move, he turned to her and yelled, the anger now flowing through, 'Get out!!' She got out of the car and began to run, looking back behind her. She looked and too late - hit the chest of a towering man with a cruel-looking mask on.
'Hello, Thea,' the owner of the mask said in a raspy voice. 'It's a pleasure to meet you.'
