The ride to the overpriced, upscale restaurant that Evan loved so much, was silent except for the finance talk radio channel he always listened to. Evan never reached over to touch me and while I was glad, involuntarily, my mind wandered to how Milo couldn't keep his hands off me in the car. I watched the scenery fly by out the passenger side window to distract me. The last thing I wanted to do right now was think about Milo and the unrestrained emotions that accompanied those thoughts. After arriving at the restaurant, the valet took the car and we headed inside. I kept a smile plaster on my face as we made our way to a table in the middle of the restaurant. I hated the way nearly every man along the way kept their eyes glued to my silk-covered chest and every woman that accompanied them looked at me with disdain. While they hated me for the way I unceremoniously showed off my body for their men to stare at, I felt horrible that I made them feel that way. The last thing I wanted was to make those women feel like they were anything less than enough.
We reached our table and finally sat opposite each other. I wanted nothing more than to down the entire bottle of wine that was already sitting on the table to make it through this evening. But I couldn't let my guard down in any way in Evan's presence. I instantly thought of how willing I was to give in to drunken thoughts with Milo. How, even though I was drunk, he always asked to touch me and I didn't fear that he would just take, while I was in a more vulnerable state. Evan most definitely would. The corner of my lips turned up in a half-smile thinking of the contrast.
" I'm glad you're having a great time," Evan told me assuming I was smiling at him.
" Thanks," I told him, trying to sound genuine. " I'm glad we are able to have a nice dinner together," I said, laying on the charm as much as possible.
To that, Evan just smiled. His eyes left mine, drifting over to one of the women whose husband had unapologetically stared at my thinly covered chest. They exchanged a smile brazenly in my line of sight and in that moment, I saw Evan's game for what it actually was. He used me tonight to make other women hate me and try to get back at me by sleeping with him. For what reason I was unsure, maybe for some twisted conquest of taking someone else's wife from right under their nose. I smiled at the irony of his actions. I was certain that she felt if she could sleep with my husband, it would undoubtedly make us 'even' for the shameless way I'd dressed tonight. Yet again, I found myself smiling, she could definitely sleep with him and it would not have the effect on me that she desired it would. I was beyond grateful for the fact that Evan's demands, in regards to my dress, had nothing to do with any sexual attention he wanted to show me. Feeling like I could breathe a little easier, I relaxed in my seat.
Evan ordered food for me, the way he always did and it made my blood boil. A salad was sat in front of me to enjoy while he gorged himself on steak and lobster. I was grateful for the salad though, the food here was disgusting in my opinion. After a few bites of my salad, my phone vibrated in my clutch that lay on my lap. My pulse sped up, surprisingly not in fear but in excitement, knowing it was more than likely Milo. I slowly pushed my chair back and stood from the table.
" I'm just going to run to the bathroom for a moment," I told Evan whose attention was still lingering on the female a few tables over.
I walked as calmly as possible the entire way to the bathroom even though I had the urge to run to a place to read the text in private. I burst open the bathroom door, thankful that no other women were in the bathroom. After locking the stall door I dug my hand in my bag fishing for my phone. I silently cursed myself for the excitement that filled me. I sat down on the toilet and opened the message.
What are you up to?
Unfortunately at dinner
A fancy dinner?
Yea
Tell me what your wearin
Something about his last text sent courage coursing through my veins. The fact that Evan had made me a spectacle for everyone to see tonight. For his own gratification with someone else, nonetheless, made me want to regain control over my body. My body wasn't for his use to get himself laid by getting jealous women to sleep with him. I opened the stall door and checked under every door making sure they were empty. Finally certain that the bathroom was empty, I stood in front of the giant floor-to-ceiling mirror and snapped a quick picture. A smile plastered my face as I hit send without a second thought. His response was quick and a few came in quick succession.
Fuck
You're not wearing a bra
Fuck thats hot elliott
I couldn't stop smiling. Out of everyone who had stared at me tonight, Milo's reaction was the only one that made me feel good.
Im glad you like it
I gotta go talk later?
Absolutely
I walked out of the bathroom with a smirk on my face, feeling beautiful. It was a strange feeling. Evan didn't even acknowledge my return as I sat back down in front of him. He motioned to the waiter and asked for the check.
" I have to head into the office for a few hours," Evan told me while signing the check. " I'll have a car come and take you home."
I chuckled watching him lock eyes with the same woman from earlier and subtly nodding his head at her. He wasn't going to the office at all, he was taking that man's wife to one of his favorite hotels for the evening. His oddly good mood didn't last for long, however, I was glad that it ended better than evenings like this usually did.
