I woke the following morning with a throbbing headache. I sat up to get out of bed for some medicine when a shooting pain rippled across my abdomen. The events of the night before came flooding back to mind. I groaned and laid back against my pillow. I must have fallen back asleep for a bit because I painfully jolted awake to the sound of my doorbell. No one rang my doorbell. I knew it was Kellan. I pulled myself out of bed and headed to the door, better to get it over with now than spend a week lying to him. I plastered a fake smile on that I knew he would see through and opened the door." What the hell, Elliott! I called you all night. You can't just cancel and give me no explanation."
" I know, I'm sorry. I just didn't feel like doing anything last night and went to bed pretty early." It was true, just not the entire truth.
Kellan's eyes scanned over my face. I knew what he was looking for but this time Evan had passed on leaving evidence on my face. He stepped closer, grabbing my shoulders to move me out of the doorway and brush past me into the foyer. The movement sent fresh pain coursing through me and I gasped. Kellan froze, still holding onto my shoulders. His eyes narrowed at me as his gaze drifted lower than my face. His fingers lightly grazed the bruise on my left arm and I winced.
" Kellan please don't," I whispered. It was one thing for him to know about it but I always wanted to shield him from seeing it.
I closed my eyes when I felt him release my shoulders from his grasp. I felt him grab the bottom of my shirt, lifting it up to inspect my abdomen. A tear escaped my eye and rolled down my cheek.
" FUCK" Kellan yelled so loud it echoed throughout the large foyer. " Come on, grab your stuff you're staying with me. I'm done with this shit El."
Kellan stormed off towards my bedroom and I trailed behind him. He went straight to my closet and pulled bags off the top shelf. He began stuffing them with the clothes closest to him.
" Do you have bathing suits in this fucking closet anywhere?" he asked
" What?" I was completely caught off guard by the strange question.
" you're staying with me until we leave for your fuckin birthday. Now, where are your goddamn bathing suits?"
I knew he was trying his hardest to not completely lose his mind. I was too. I walked into the closet to help him, stuffing a few bathing suits in a bag he had laid on the floor. I wasn't sure what to say so silence filled the closet as we both stuffed clothing into bags. I moved as little as possible to not show how much pain I actually was in but he knew. He acted like he didn't see it, but he did. Kellan grabbed all the bags and headed out towards his car.
" If I took you to a doctor would you even go in?" Kellan asked as we sat in his car about to drive off
" Kellan," I whispered
" I didn't think so."
We drove to his house in silence and it was deafening. Kellan sat all the haphazardly stuffed bags on the floor of the guest bedroom then leaned against the door frame facing me. I carefully sat on the bed, reigning in my expressions to mask the pain that shot through me. Instantly I thought of the last time I stayed at my brother's house and how his best friend had just let himself in, with Kellan's permission, yes, but fear coursed through me thinking of who might just show up.
" Hey, listen, your friends," Kellan quickly cut me off
" no one will come over. I'll make sure." his voice was clipped and he shut the door saying nothing else.
I knew Kellan wasn't mad at me. I knew that but at the same time, it's all I could think. I knew that all his anger was directed at Evan and the situation that I was in. I could remind myself of that every day but it didn't change the fact that I felt like a burden. I would never blame him for being mad at me for not leaving Evan and getting out of this messed-up situation. I hoped that he was because I was mad at me too.
Finally, His need to take care of me finally overtook his anger and he started bringing me pain medicine and snacks every few hours. I slept for what felt like days. I received texts from Milo every day. And each one made my stomach flutter. One night my brother was out with all of his friends and I was sitting on his couch watching tv when Milo called me. My heart stopped and butterflies erupted on my stomach.
"Hello?"
"Hey" Milo breathed on the other end.
"Aren't you out with Kellan?"
" yea, he was talking about you and how you were stayin at his house for a little bit. So I figured you'd be safe if I called you."
"Oh yea, no it's fine. But you guys are at a club right? Shouldn't you be like I dunno, clubbing?" I laughed even though I was glad he was talking to me.
" Let me come over." It was a statement but also a request for permission.
"Why?" I breathed
"Cus I don't want to be at a club right now." He paused and I was about to speak when he started again " I want to see you."
