The twins birthday party wasn't as much of a disaster. Malcom may have avoided me at every turn, but Percy made me laugh till my stomach hurt."Knock knock"
"Who's there?"
"An owl"
"An owl who?"
"An owl you"Okay maybeeee Percy wasn't a total prick
I don't know why it even got a laugh out of me. But it did. Grover and Juniper didn't leave my side either, so I had a fun time.
I gifted the twins a make your own slime kit, which put me back in Helen's bad graces. I had to clean the sticky mess off the couch.
The next day, was a normal school day.
The classes passed on as usual. And I was pretty sure I did well on the maths test we had today. The only thing different about this normal school day, was Miss Mellie's replacement. Who was arriving today.
That's all I was thinking about as I walked towards my locker, which....was obviously (given the trend) parallel to Percy's locker.
When he saw me, he moved to stand beside me.
"So.....Malcom left huh?" he asked, hands stuffed in his pockets.
I took a deep breath before nodding , mustering a smile, "Yeah. Gone back to wherever he came from." No need to be rude to him Annabeth, he just asked a question.
"I'm really sorry-"
"No," I shook my head, trying to ease his guilt ridden face. He was really sorry. And I....I wasn't going to give him a harder time about it, despite my first instinct.
"You didn't know, it's all right. I forgive you," I replied
"So...did Grover tell you bout the movies today?" Percy asked.
I was kinda surprised when Grover invited Percy and I to the movies the day after the party, with Juniper too, of course.
But he reallyyyy wanted to watch this new movie called 'The Choosing'I hadn't really heard of it, but Grover was adamant that it would have us connect as a group. So he forced us to go along with him.
I suppose since it was a Friday.
I nodded, glad for a change in the conversation,"Yeah he did. After school right? So once we're done with that, we need to work in our project,"
Percy grinned, "Can you get your mind off work for one second?"
I felt a tug on my lips, "I did! That's why I said yes! Now what do you say? My place or yours?"
"Mine," Percy replied. I nodded in approval.
I nodded in response, stopping at my locker to exchange my books.
I also informed him that we could take a day off building the shed today. I was incharge of it's construction after all"Miss Mellie's replacement is coming today, what do you think?" I asked idly, to fill up the silence.
He smirked, "Oh I know he's gonna be awesome,"
"Why?" I asked, looking at him looking ecstatic.
"You'll see," he grinned all the way into class, where a Mr Blofis was waiting.
This Mr Blofis, seemed like a guy in his late thirties, with longish salt-and-pepper hair, and a brown jacket over a black T-shirt.
"Hello, you must be....let me hazard a guess....Percy Jackson," the teacher grinned, looking at Percy up and down.
Percy mocked a bow, "That is me. And this is the one and onlyyyy Annabeth Chase," he pointed to me.
I, with my incredible self control, didn't scowl at Percy. I promised Grover, and he deserved my best efforts.
However I did jab him in the ribs with my index finger and I walked over to Mr Blofis to shake his hand.
"So you're the girl Sally can't stop raving about," he said, smiling.
"And you're the new history teacher," I replied, confused. How did he know Sally? Or what she thought of me? Was he a close family friend? I never met him before.
With a nod, he motioned us to our seats and greeted Frank who walked through the door looking like a sad panda. He loved miss mellie.
I'd have to console him later. Poor baby.
"Hey," I leaned over my desk, to where Percy was sitting, "How do you know Mr Blofis?"
"Oh Paul and I?" he asked, those gorgeous eyes twinkling, "we go wayyy back,"
I rolled my eyes, "how back?"
"About 4 years, he and mom were old friends from college," he whispered, as Piper McLean took the seat next to him.
"Did he always live in town? I don't remember meeting him," I prodded
Percy and I practically lived in each other's houses and there was absolutely nothing we didn't tell each other as kids. So there's no way I didn't know Mr Blofis.
"Na he moved into town with us after he and mom got married," he replied.
You know when you're walking up the stairs and you miss a step? And your heart feels like it's gonna fall off and you loose your balance for a minute?
That's how I felt.
Sally was married again....And...Percy had a new stepfather.
How....
Why did he not tell me?!And why did you not tell him about Helen? Or Athena? A voice sounding like Grover chastised in the back of my mind.
Touché, mind Grover.
The shock must have been visible on my face because Percy reached over, patting my hand.
"You know...I'm safe now," he whispered softly, looking straight into my eyes.
I felt my cheeks flush in embarrassment.
I was truly horrible to him.
I couldn't get myself to speak, and gulped down a response. I offered a nod."We have some catching up to do," he chuckled, his eyes lightened a shade.
I felt no resentment as I smiled back at him, "yeah, we do."
"Alright class, you guys have your patterns picked out and the project explained right? We'll go over that at the end of the class. For now, turn to page 394," Mr Blofis began.
With a wink, Percy turned back. And I paid attention in class.
Maybe I can put the past behind. Not only for Grovers sake, but a little bit for me too.
