"Since when do you care about this stuff?" Thalia groaned, throwing herself onto the pile of discarded clothes on the floor."I...I don't! I just want to look good!" I retorted, launching a dress towards her, "Now help me pick!"
Today was the third day the
county fair was in town.
And is the day Percy and I go on our first official date....or not official yet date. We hadn't decided that yet.I was on the verge of losing it.
I was never one to care a lot about my dresses and fuss over my clothes. But something about today sent my nerves into a stuttering mess.
Especially when I awoke this morning completely hating the outfit I picked a week prior.
"Is she still not ready yet?" Luke asked from the other side of the door, pushing it open after hearing no response.
"Annie! The rooms's a mess! What's gotten into you?" he gasped, immediately setting to work by tossing some clothes onto the bed
"That's what I've been telling her Luke! She's gonna look good in whatever!" Thalia groaned
"But!" I couldn't find the words to explain it.
It's not like this was my first date ever. I'd been on a fair amount of dates in my life, with quite decent guys that too.
But there was just something about going on a date with Percy. My best friend and the boy who practically stole half of my heart.
Ugh! Feelings
"Annabeth!!!! We can't find our legos!" Matthew screamed, bursting into my room, "Bobby thinks you ate them!"
"Tell Bobby I'm going to eat you if you don't leave right now!" I stamped my foot, sending my brother scurrying away and Helen walking in.
"You're still not ready, Annabeth? You've been at it for two hours," she chuckled, looking at the state of my room.
"That's what I've been saying!" Luke commented.
"None of you are helping right now!" I threw a shirt up in the air.
"Right. That's what I came for," Helen said suddenly, plastering a bright smile on her face.
She disappeared for a minute, reappearing with what appeared to be a large box.
"Well...call me sentimental but...maybe you would like to wear this?" she said, slowly setting the box down at my desk.
"What is it?" I asked, trying to peer over Helen's shoulder.
Beside me, Thalia whined,"It better be food. I'm starving"
"Thals!" Luke shook his head
"Come here," Helen said, ignoring Thalias plea.
I almost gasped, looking inside it. It was a beautiful back dress, neatly tucked inside the box, clearly with a lot of love and care.
Helen fanned it out, my eyes immediately going to its sleeves. They were something out of a fairy tale, light and almost iridescent.
"It's...beautiful, Helen," I whispered, and even Thalia begrudgingly agreed.
"It was the dress I wore for my first date with your father," she chuckled, soothing out the dress,"seeing how nervous you are just reminded me of that day.....and besides, I always hoped that one day, my daughter would wear the dress."
"I....thankyou....it's beautiful," I felt a lump in my throat.
Helen and I may not agree on many things...but we've always shared the sentiment that family comes first.
I'd just never realised she considered me 'true' family, until this very moment.
"Thank you," I hugged her. Probably one of the first times I ever did.
I could feel Helen stiffen for a second, before wrapping her arms around me.
"I do love you, Annabeth. I hope you know that."
"I love you too, Helen," I replied
I'm pretty sure that was the first time we said that to each other. And I meant it from the bottom of my heart.
"Now...it's time to try on the dress! Percy's gonna be here and two hours and you need to eat too!" Luke clapped, motioning me to move with my hands.
"Alright then, get out all of you," I laughed at his enthusiasm.
The dress fit really well
It was certainly loose in some parts, but I managed to pin them down and it looked....amazing. I felt amazing.
"You look beautiful," Helen gasped as I exited my room. I was pretty sure I could see some mist In her eyes.
"Annie you look-" Thalia began.
"Gorgeous," Luke finished, ruffling my hair, "But then again, you always do"
"Luke! My hair," I hid my smile, pushing him away.
"Hey Helen? How did you do your hair when you wore this?" I asked my stepmother.
She gave me a light smile and moved towards me.
And twenty minutes later.
I was ready.
"Are you sure it's not too much?" I asked at the supper table, finishing my cup off coffee and biscuits that Luke practically forced down my throat.
"Shut up! You look perfect," Thalia replied, swiping a biscuit off my plate, "And besides, I'm sure kelp-head is gonna be just as over dressed, If not more"
"So you agree, you think I'm overdressed," I sighed, my palms beginning to sweat.
"Doesn't matter what I think. He's here now anyway," Thalia grinned, pointing at the door.
"But Thals-"
Ding dooooonggggg
The bell rang.
"I hate you," I whispered to her as I went to go answer it.
And sure enough.....as much as I hate to admit it, Thals was right.
Percy was in front of me, wearing a formal shirt and vest which suspiciously matched the colour of my dress.
He looked absolutely breathtaking. I almost forgot to let him in.
"I got....wow....I got.....flowers," Percy said, handing me bouquet of lilies.
"Thankyou, Seaweed brain. I love them," I smiled, happy to have something to fiddle with in my hands.
Percy said a quick hello to everyone. Agreed to Luke's condition that I must be hope before 11pm and dealt with all of Thalia's teasing.
After all of which, we set off for our date...or not date. I suppose I'm going to find out.
