It may seem pretty inevitable, but ofcourse, Ben over the weekend wouldn’t think of anything other than what had happened at the Winter Dance… and in particular, over what Eleanor had said… it was what mostly replayed on in his mind.
Its stupid, Ben knows… because Ben knew he should shove those thoughts aside… he has a girlfriend now, and second, it still hadnt replace the fact that Devi had still done what she had…
But his mind revolved over the thought that Devi had… infact… may have chosen him… and over Paxton?… now that had seemed… what's the word?… inconceivable to him… undeniably something Ben didnt see as the slightest bit ever possible… ever.Ben knew how much, over many years, Devi had obsessed over the captain of the swim team… maybe since the day she had laid eyes on him?… Ben personally believes she's been obsessed with Paxton for her entire life. Something he never understood… something his struggled to understand… Paxton may be a good looking guy but his personality… well, to Ben, it was an easy 4 out of 10.
His confused feelings played with him. Because for one, as has been stated, he already has a girlfriend… the strong impeding sense of guilt would churn in his stomach every time he thought of Devi. He should only have thoughts on Aneesa, right?… not on the girl who had practically destroyed his life by choosing to date two boys at once! One of which was him, obviously.
He had to remind himself to focus… remind himself that “so what if Devi may have choosen him first” because nothing was fixed… how could anything fix what she had done…
…But why cant these damned feelings just stop… his thoughts continue to struggle on that…And Ben had not expected that the next day he would be constantly reminded that Devi and Paxton were together… a couple… an item…
His phone buzzed constantly, inundate with notifications on Twitter and Insta reminding him that it were all too real… photos of the couple being tagged numerously… photos from the Winter Dance, photos from their weekend. And as he walks the halls of the school he can hear the gossips and rumours revolved around the two. As he passes Trent and Marcus, he hears more then he thinks he needs to hear.
“So rumour has it that Paxton is dating Devi because apparently Devi has a hot cousin whose dating one of the teachers at this school and now he can get away with playing hooky. Isn't that rad?” Trent howlers this bit of misinformation as Marcus scoffs incredulously. “The teacher might even give him better marks.”
Ben sneers in disbelief, hearing more than his ears could handle.
He wonders over to his locker and begins to open it when he notices Devi approaching him from the other end of the corridor… he rolls his eyes as he sees that smug smile Ben knew all to well she was coming for him… ready to gloat…
As she reaches him, she stops, placing a hand on her hip, watching him with that superior look he knows so well… one that indicated she were ready to cut into him.
“So you thought wrong.” She hums, jeeringly. “Guess your not so smart after all.” She smirks. Ben quietly but scornfully laughs to himself. She watches him as he goes through his locker. "You know… Paxton is committed… his given me a couples name.” She heavily sighs at his contempt.
Ben scoffs, giving her a disgusted side glimpse.
“Wait, don’t tell me… he calls you babe? How original. I’m sure his called his other hundred girlfriends the same thing. Don’t think your so special.”
Devi scrunches her face at him.
“N-no.” she huffs, blushing a little… And he knew his made that little crack into her already.
Ben scoffs with disbelief.
“Then what? I bet he hasn’t got the brain to come up with something original.” He rolls the last word off his tongue proposefully to annoy her. Her cheeks flush red. “Or does he call you pumpkin… or is it cupcake?” Ben continues, then snorts.
Devi's eyes widen, nervously darting them around, hoping he wouldn’t make fun of it.
“W-well… no… h-he calls me… bear.”
Ben wishes he’d wanted to find this bit of information amusing… funny… infact his finding himself a little tongue-tied…because… maybe he had thought the name was kind of… maybe sweet?….
Instead, he purses his lips with annoyance, grabs his bag and swings it over his shoulder, not understanding why the nickname was making his blood fume with thoughts of… Paxton… And how he was already giving her a couples name…
Instead he scoffs, trying to push down these deep feelings trying to resurface… to creep up on him.
“I-it's dumb… the name.” He says as he turns and begins to try to walk away, only to realise she continues to follow him when she locks a hand to his arms and pulls him back, making him turn to her. He watches her confused. Standing her ground, she clenches her jaw. She staggers for words, but she eventually gets them out.
“Ben, why are you like this? I thought- I thought y-you…” she says then stops again, a grunt of frustration escaping her. She doesn’t now what to say… because she doesn't know what she needs to ask… Ben's behaviour was baffling her. “A-are you acting like this b-because… you know…”
Ben’s eyes wonder over her, waiting for her to finish, when he suddenly realises that maybe she had been catching on… to how he’d felt… how he still feels… to what had been eating up inside of him… feelings he had been desparately trying to push a way… even deny to himself. His eyebrows suddenly pinch together, swallowing down the tightness in his throat, feeling defensive… feeling kind of vulnerable also… and as always, Ben will always quip his way out of feeling weakened or threatened infront of Devi… finding ways to divert what she may have been thinking… or sensing from him…
“Because I’m concerned your dating a guy with the maturity of a toddler?” He grunts. “No, Devi. I’m not worried. You should be, though. He'll only waist your time. And you know his only using you.”
He grimances as he turns and walks away. And he can sense as she continues to watch him on as he walks away, wishing she would stop him once again… just so she could press him on… make him know that she still cared…maybe even break him a little… make him slightly crack… make all those deep submerged feelings spill… and maybe even begin to express how he'd really felt this whole time… for her…
That is until his reminded of Aneesa, as she stands there infront of their next class… with that wide bright grin that greets him… and his heart drops in his chest… because he knows he needs to force Devi out of his mind…
He can’t ever do it… tell her how really he feels… because it sure as hell may ruin his life… he can't tell her how he can’t stop thinking of her… that he never had… because to Ben, its evident… that she could ruin his life all over again… except this time it could break him apart completely.☆---------------------------------------------
