Devi sits on a bench, outside, under a large oak tree, a cool breeze runs through her hair, her elbow perched on a table infront of her as her hand props up her head and chin.
She were gazing at the sight of Paxton and Aneesa as they seem to run into each other on the school front lawn. Aneesa curling a loose strand of hair to the side, away from her face and behind her ear.
She shyly glances at Paxton, and Paxton almost seems a little blushed.
Devi groans, letting her hand slip through her hair, simmering with irritation, considering they had just broken up yesterday… and Aneesa does very little to hide the ‘spark’ she feels for Paxton… her ex… maybe a bit too much like she had with Ben when they had first started dating…
Why is she feeling like this- she questions herself- she has already begun to prepare herself to get over Paxton, and so she feels she shouldn’t need to feel this way… especially if this is what she may encounter a lot more often now that Paxton and her were broken up…
But she also reminds herself that the wound is fresh… even if they had come to the conclusion- that night they last argued- that they couldnt be or stay together… so Devi pleads her mind to just let go.
El and Fab should not have left her alone… they had disappeared to grab drinks from the school cafeteria a while ago and not returned…
They could have waited for class before leaving her on her own on the chance she would have to witness something like this… today… the day after a terrible break up!… and now Devi had to sit there as she waits with their bags… having to witness how fast it seemed maybe some people might move on? Had Paxton moved on?
El and Fab would surely return to a very bitter Devi sitting there biting away at her nails, anxiously and frustrated.
Devi hadn’t needed this kind of torture, and she doesnt think she can stand it any longer and so she callopses her face into the palms of her hands, just so she can look away for a brief moment and give herself some time to breath?
She startles when she feels as someone drops right down beside her with a drawn out heavy sigh, and she instantly whips round to see Zoey.
Like her day couldn’t get any worse…
“I never thought I'd ever say this, Devi-”
Dev’s face wrinkles in confusion.
“But” Zoey pauses to give her a devishly smirk. "can I, like, sit with you?”
At first Devi wasnt so sure what to make of her question, but she watches her carefully, and cautiously and very much confused, tempted to say ‘no’, but something holds her off… maybe it had been the flash of vulnerability that had come across Zoey’s eyes as she had locked eyes with Devi for a brief moment.
Devi’s face scrunches up, watchful of Zoey but also trying to read why Zoey was really there? or what she had really wanted.
Zoey crosses her legs, fixes her skirt and pulls out a salad from her bag. She catches the confusion on Devi's face, and she smirks again.
“I just want to see that sour look on your face- you know, the one you gave Paxton and his new girlfriend as you creep on them from over here” she snickers, and Devi purses her lips angrily.
Ok, so maybe this wasn’t a good idea, and she feels as her anger builds, biting down on her lower lip as she refrains herself from launching at Zoey or retaliating with hurtful words she wanted to bite back… Zoey had tried kissing Paxton while Devi and he had still been together and she will never be forgetting that… and she feels her fists tighten in her lap.
Zoey’s gaze turns swifty back to her lunch, picking at her food with a plastic fork. “Because…” she huffs out, her tone a little more thick now, she has to clear her throat first before letting out a slightly exasperated sigh.
Her gaze lifting up to Paxton… lingering on him for a while before they shift to Aneesa who wears a bright smile. “I can finally say…” her gaze can’t hold Devi's before she is looking away again. “We may finally have something in common.”
Zoey gives her a tiny sincere smile as she shrugs, then looks back toward Paxton again.
Devi’s brows furrow, deeply, and then her expression morphs to a cringe as she tries to grasp and try to solve and balance what she had meant. She looks back at Paxton, then Zoey again.
“No. We-” she darts her finger between herself and Zoey and back. “we have nothing in common… nor are we anything alike.” She says straight out, trying to make that part clear.
Zoey tries to hold back a chuckle, watching Devi's expression suddenly twist into displeasure.
“What? Because your massive nerd crush is nothing like mine?.” she smirks again.
“Zoey?! You kissed Paxton while we had still been together! Why are you even here?”
Zoey swallows down the words… she thinks about if she should leave… but she stays. Suddenly, Zoey’s expression turns serious, but her eyes roam over Devi softly, like she were genuine about what she were about to say… or how she had wanted to express how she had felt.
“Yeah, I was wrong, Devi. And… you know… Im sorry.” She offers a tiny smile, shrugging her shoulders regretfully.
“When you showed up… You felt like Aneesa might feel to you now. And it hurt. But I’m sorry. I literally felt like you were stealing Paxton away from me… and I know it doesn’t make anything right… but I didn’t know how or what to do… and I…” she shrugs her shoulder, admittingly. “I made a mistake.” She sighs, taking in a deep breath before she continues. “His been my life crush… too. I just didn’t know how to deal with it… or to let that go… I gave him everything, hoping he would give me something back. But I don’t know what he sees in me… and why he cant, like, see how much I like him. You know?”
Devi’s fierce gaze on her, softens just a little, watching as Zoey's gaze seemed honest and sincere.
Her heart still bled with what Zoey had done… but maybe what had suprised her was that Zoey had made some kind of first step? Maybe the first step she’d ever tried to take? And Devi hadn’t known why? Devi didnt know what was going on in Zoey's mind, but one thing was certain… Devi wasnt going to stop hurting for a while… but she felt like things could maybe be ok between her an Zoey eventually…
Devi sighs, looking away, as she thinks.
“Well… ,”Devi says, Zoey raises a brow at her, waiting for her reply… “your still obsessed with Paxton… were as I’m…” she looks away. “Im somewhere else… Im just starting to understand things and put things together… trying to get past things… and Im slowly starting to move on.”
Zoey lets out a nervous lighthearted trying-to-be-understanding chuckle she wasn’t use to, darting her eyes over Devi quickly, and Devi returns a light smile.
Zoey grunts, looking back down at her food.
“Well I was really counting on us having one of those girl nights… you know, so we could obsess over Paxton or whatever… you know, eat ice cream, gossip… and cry into each others arms if we have too.” She mischievously smiles.
Devi scoffs, suprised and yet amused.
“You mean, a Zoey and Devi night? I would have never guessed.” She laughs.
“Well,” Zoey shrugs. “Your better at giving advice than Shira.”
Devi would have never agree to what she had suggested, but she gives in to a halfway smile anyway.
But then her gaze dims, feeling a weigh over her head as they talk about boys and obsessions… and crying… and she casts her eyes away… beginning to pick away at her finger nails…
“I think I’m no longer obsessed with Paxton… but I also can’t seem to get someone else out of my mind…” she says frustratedly.
Zoey pouts, giving Devi a weirded out look.
“Are you talking about Trent? Ew.”
Devi scoffs with disgust.
“No.” She rumbles.
“Ok, sorry, it was just a guess.” Zoey snorts.
“A really bad one.” Devi grimances at her, wondering if Zoey actually believed Trent were ever really someone Devi'd thought about in that way. “But even so… even if anyone asks… I wouldn’t tell.”
“Ben, isn’t it? I knew it was Ben.” Zoey says with certainty. “What is it with you and that Sheldon looking guy?.”
Devi groans, not giving her an answer.
As her gaze does look away her eyes does catch Ben as he climbs out of his car… her frustrated feelings toward him beginning to re-emerge and build, and an anger begins to rise and forms out of no where, as her thoughts go back to how they had left things last…
He had broken her and Paxton up… it was him… and this was his fault…
“Well your not with Paxton anymore, girl-”
“That doesn't matter.” She accidentally finds herself snapping, trying to cut Zoey off. She clears her throat, composing her tone again… and herself… and trying to offer Zoey an apologetic look. “His just someone I need to forget.” She says with a slightly strained voice. “Because his no better than Paxton.”
Just as she finishes saying this, Ben's gaze lifts and locks directly with Devis’. He cocks his head away, suprised to have seen her directly gazing at him, his heart starts to race… shifting his gaze any where but not letting it travel back on her…
But his fighting off the dire need to look- trying to stop himself from glancing her way… to know if her eyes were still on him? His heart pounds, and he finds himself giving in, looking out at her from the corner of his eyes at first… he bites at the inside of his cheek as his gaze slowly returns to see Devi's eyes brightly gleamering at him with something so intriguing to him… but yet maybe slightly dangerous too and that keeps him slightly more taut…
He knew she had been thinking alot… of more than one thing… and this time he doesn’t break his gaze, wondering if he should go over… or if it would just be plain suicide…
“You should come to my party.” Zoey suddenly says, breaking Devi’s focus off of Ben.
She flits her gaze over Zoey, shocked… not finding anything that had said Zoey weren’t being serious…
Her mouth opens to reply that she hadnt thought it would be a good idea, when Zoey cuts in first… uttering some words that catch Devi's interest.
“I mean, there will be lots of booze… an array of drinks, liquor and liqueurs,” she sighs, trying to entice her, admiring her own nails. She then lifts her gaze up at Devi with a devishly smile. “And I’ll make sure to include some velvety chocolates and indulgent cakes.”
Devi watches her reluctantly at first, before she gives in with a sigh of defeat.
“Yeah ok,” she mumbles, shrugging her sounds. “Im in. Sounds like the perfect disastrous plan for after a break up. Alcohol, chocolate, all in a party.”
Then her eyes widen, and she glances back at Zoey questioningly.
“Wait- Paxton won’t be there, right?”
“Maybe. But so will most of the school. You wont even see him.”
Devi shrugs again, resting her chin against her palm as she thinks.
“I-I’ll think about it.”☆------------------------------------------------
