Chapter 19

You pace outside Hange's office door. Back and forth, back and forth, over and over again.

"Y/N JUST COME IN." Hange shouts through the door.

The door creaks as the you open it.

"How did you-"

"Know you were wanting in?" You nod, "you always used to pace outside this office when Erwin was in charge."

"Oh." You walk further into the office and take a seat of the sofa in front of a small table that has ring marks from hot drinks.

"Y/N how many times have I told you that you don't have to pace for 30 minutes before coming into my office."

"Sorry Commander Erwin."

"Now what can I help you with?"

When sitting in Hange's office all you could think is: thank god there was no one else in that restaurant when I broke down. I would've died from embarrassment.

That whole ordeal did have you ponder over what Armin was meaning. You did not feel like you could ask anyone, if Sasha was still alive you could of gone to her, but she is dead, six foot under.

"Y/N you're twitching spill it." Hange does not even look up from their paperwork.

"I remember Sasha-" Hange jumps up, slips across their desk, spilling paperwork everywhere and grabs your hands.

"DO YOU REMEMBER ME?!" you sadly shake your head, "just Sasha."

You nod, "I'm sorry, I should've made that more clear."

"Don't apologise, none of this is your fault," They bring you into a hug, "even though I wish you made it clearer sooner, especially before I slide over my desk."

"I do have something to ask you though," Hange breaks the hug to meet your eyes, "what's my relationship with Armin Arlet?" Hange's face twists in confusion, "when I first got back, he gave me a crash course on everyone, like Levi and his tea, Jean and Marco-"

"Y/N I was there when he told you," they laugh lightly, "now that you mention it though, I think Armin did miss out a teeny weeny bit of information-"

"What!" You frantically grab Hange, wondering if Armin was your long lost relative, more like wishing that Armin was a relation.

"The day you disappeared was the day Armin confessed his love to you," Hange turns, fiddling with their hands, "I think he blames himself, he was the last to speak to you after all."

In utter distress you cover your face and throw yourself onto the couch.

"It makes so much sense... I was at that restaurant with Armin and Jean and Armin seemed too quiet and Jean just seemed too protective- no wonder he doesn't really speak to me, the pent up guilt he must feel-" you bring your knees to your chest, "when I was with the warriors I never had trouble like this."

"Y/N you're not in Marley anymore-"

"Don't you think I know! Much to everyone's surprise I was happy there. Yes I may have lived in a prison cell for the first 9 months, yes I may have only been a pawn, yes I may have been looked down on but, you know what? No one ever had previous expectations for me to live up to. Here it's Y/N do you remember this, Y/N do you remember that. Can you remember when-"

"Y/N CALM DOWN!" Hange shouts throwing a book, it flies past your face.

"WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT." You quickly stand, I getting defensive.

All Hange can do is laugh, "I have no fucking clue." you begin to laugh as well. You could not remember how spontaneous they were, how positively mad Hange was. The duet of laughter continued to echo through the room.

"Hange?" the laughter dies off, "when I was in Marley, I heard things about Armin and now that you mention that Armin was the last one with me - do you think that Armin managed to wipe my memory-"

"I know you're struggling to trust us, but trust this Y/N... Armin would never do such a thing, not to someone who is so close to him," they pause, brushing your hair from your face, "You have to remember Y/N, none of this is your fault."

As if right on cue a guard kicks down the door. He has beads of sweat on his forehead and breathes heavily, obviously in a state of panic and shock.

"COMMANDER HANGE THE CHILDREN HAVE ESCAPED."

Now, that is 100% your fault.
