Related to Everett Bane through Ender Bane (Uncle) Cassius was raised under the principals and beliefs of the Bane legacy. Although born with a low amount of magic that did not allow for mutant abilities to manifest, Cassius was still pushed like any other Bane.

Cassius always blamed himself for not being as good as his siblings and not being seen as equally worthy of love and affection. He battled with his own self-perception and confidence throughout the years until he reached the tender age of 16. With no one to speak out how much they'd care for him, Cassius left home.

His parents erased him from the family tree, didn't mention Cassius ever again and punished those that dared to mention their son. He became a ghost to his own blood.

Joining a group of mercenaries, Cassius learned to adapt to new ways and survive on just the bare minimum. Growing up on earning money through killing caused Cassius to harden and adapt a second personality. Ruthless, craving for blood.

Hearing news about Everetts rebellious actions caused Cassius to grow interested. While wanting no more ties to his former home he could not help but crave to support Everett. He wanted his family's rage, a sweet revenge for treating him so little with respect.

Cassius sees a powerful ally in Everett, not because they're blood related but after seeing that Everett is in the company of three strong supernaturals. Revealing himself to them, he joined them much to Shaw's dismay. Those two don't get along very well.

Talking and reconciling with Everett after so many years revealed to Cassius that nothing changed in the Bane household and that Everett got the bad treatment as well. Cassius might have grown soft on Everett, Asra and Asena too. Casualties of war, barely adults in his eyes and yet forced to fight a fight that was never theirs to begin with.

You could say that Cassius and Shaw act like a married couple, raising two children that have no idea how to handle life.

He keeps his enhanced abilities to himself and reveals his trump card to very few, the only ones who could tell about it have since long been haunted down and gotten rid off. Therefore the name "the Gambit", with Cassius you never know which game you have entered.
