Four days had passed, an yet nothing had changed at Meredith's condition. She still got exhausted from the slightest movements and the smallest things had her worn out. And by now she wasn't just physically unwell but she also started to show signs of depression.
"Dr. Bailey, can I talk to you for a moment?" Andrew asked after they just came out of a patient room on Meredith's floor. "Yeah sure what's up?" she replied, turning round to face him while laying down the tablet she'd been holding on the nurse station.
"I uhm- I don't even really know how to put this... Well it seems like Mer will be stuck in the hospital for another few days or well- weeks, and I think it'll help her a little if she could get out of here for a little while. I mean just for a few hours, a short walk maybe. I just want to get her out of her room for a few hours because I don't think it'll have a positive effect on her if she'd been stuck in the same room for almost a month, without seeing the sunlight a single time or getting some fresh air in general."
"Am I seeing it correctly that you wont take 'no' for an answer?" Bailey replied, with a typical Bailey-like expression before Andrew shook his head. "You know that we're on a lockdown and Grey just recovered from covid?! I don't think it'll be good to take her out of here and expose her-"
"I'll just take her to the park of the hospital. She'll be in a wheelchair, I'll make sur she's not freezing and we'll take an oxygen tank with us so if she'll get an asthma attack I can keep her on oxygen while bringing her back in. We won't come close to any other patients, we'll wear a mask while walking past people and I'll make sure we both wont be exposed to any kind of bacteria." Andrew said, interrupting the chief who was now looking at him, thinking about what he had just suggested.
"Fine, but not more than two hours. Her lungs are still terribly weak and she'll get tired by his anyways pretty quick." Bailey finally gave in making Andrew smile brightly. "Thank you" he breathed, lifting up his thumbs before turning around and practically running towards Meredith's room.
When he opened the door he found her laying in bed, awake and reading something on a tablet. As soon as she spotted him she quickly tried to hide the tablet under the blanket, looking at him mischievously.
"What are you doing?" he chuckled, walking over to her, where she was still trying to hide the fact that she had somehow managed to get access to a hospital tablet. "Nothing" she replied quickly, smiling at him. "Who gave you that tablet?" he asked, sitting down at the edge of the bed and trying to pull the tablet out from under the covers but she kept her hands pressed down on top of it to keep it in its place.
"Mer" he sighed accusingly, looking at her sadly. He hated how much she was hurting while she was being kept away from her kids and work. "I'm sorry I just- wanted to see how my patients were doing..." she admitted, looking down in her lap as she finally released the grip from he blanket so he could grab the tablet.
"Don't be sorry, I get it Mer it's okay. How are you feeling?" he then asked as he noticed how she was fidgeting with her hands before answering with a mumbled: "I'm fine"
Without hesitating any longer, he put his hand on top of hers to stop them from shaking and offering her some comfort. "You're not fine Mer" he whispered while she kept her head down. And then suddenly after a few seconds had passed he stood up, making her finally look up at him before he disappeared into the hallway. She sighed, before wiping away a tear that had escaped her eye as she thought that he was mad at her now. But then the door opened and a wheelchair was pushed into the room. Without saying anything he walked over to the closet and pulled out a thick jacket and another blanket. Walking over to her bed again he gestured her to sit up what she did and he helped her put on the jacket.
"What are you doing?" she asked as he pulled away her covers and pushed the wheelchair closer to her bed. "We are going on a walk." He replied, meeting her gaze for the first time since he had came back. "What?" she gave back, obviously confused. "Mer, you've been stuck in here for almost a month, and regarding your latest test results you won't be able to go home for another few days so I thought you'd want to get out of here for a few hours." He said his mouth twisting in a lovingly smile.
Without hesitating she moved closer to the edge of the mattress, swinging her legs down and reaching out to grab his arm for support. He helped her into the wheelchair and covered her with two blankets before cupping her face with both his hands and looking at her. "I want to kiss you so badly" he whispered, seeing her emerald green eyes sparkle in the light.
"Soon" she replied, her eyes telling him that she desired the same. And she did. She wanted nothing more to kiss him. To capture his lips with hers, soft at first, before deepening the kiss and getting more passionate. Moving her fingers through his soft, curls while he would pull her closer by her hip and-
"You warm?" were the words that suddenly pulled her out of her daydream. "Yeah" she said softly, again hiding her hands under the blankets to keep them warm which was actually no use because they were stone cold ever since she got covid.
She was curious what he had in mind where they would go as he pushed her through the hallway and towards the elevator. "Where are we going?" she asked as they were in the lift and she couldn't deny the fact that she was excited about getting out of the hospital, even if it was just for a few hours.
"You'll see" he replied with a smile on his face as he knew her well enough to tell that she was eager. They heard the ding and walked out of the elevator and into the main lobby before exiting the hospital through the main entrance.
As soon as they were through the doors Meredith took off her mask and took a deep breath. Well- as deep as her lungs would let her without getting an asthma attack. Just in case he had taken an oxygen bottle and an inhaler with him. He took off his mask as well as he continued to push her towards the park on the opposite side of the street where you could also find a small lake, which was his goal.
He saw her looking around and taking in the beauty of the nature in the middle of the city. Silently they made their way through the short alley before reaching the lake where he was headed for a bench directly at the edge, flowers surrounding them while they would have a perfect view over the whole lake, the fishers, the birds and the other people.
He stopped the wheelchair and pressed down the break, before walking around her and picking her up. At first she seemed surprised but she immediately put her arms around his neck and snuggled into his chest. He sat down on the bench with her on his lap. She leant back into him as he adjusted the blanket, making sure she wouldn't catch a cold.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, enjoying the warmth of the sun on their skins and each other's presence since they hadn't been so close ever since Meredith was admitted to the hospital. "Thank you for taking me here." She whispered, as he buried his face in her hair, breathing in the familiar scent of lavender.
"Nothing to thank me for" he replied, keeping his arms around her protectively. "Are you warm?" he asked concerned.
"I'm literally wearing a sweater, a thick jacket, a blanket and I have my personal heater, how could I possibly be cold." She giggled, sighing in content. "I'm your personal heater?" he chuckled at her choice of words. "Yup" she replied.
"Then I guess you'll have to keep me around." He said smiling, looking over the beautiful landscape, the love of his life cuddled into him on his lap. "I don't plan on letting you go again" she whispered before closing her eyes, a big smile on her face.
