The worst of both worlds

The unease grew as more and more creatures began to fight them when they were at their "safe place". Some of them were shooting fireballs, others knives and unfortunately, they also had to take care of finishing off the ones who could grow as many heads as they wanted. There were also few of those Sheila had once told Crimson about when they had first met: the sort which could stretch their hands and clench it around a neck to make their victim suffocate.

The blind man didn't dare to go out and join the others while they fought; it was too risky for him and there was no way he could get used to the loss of his vision that fast. He would need weeks, months, maybe even years to accept this situation as the new normal, and again months or years to learn how to cope with everything the world offered to him - every fight for now, but every chance to finally find the happiness he always had searched for in the future.

While he had time to think when the others were outside facing the creatures, he came up with another one of his questions; something probably no one of the group could answer him: Gyrthon had talked about a few universes and Scarlet, Lilith and Sheila also had known about that. What if they erased the Kathrenian universe and everyone who had connections to the Cult on their earth? Would there still be chances for the Cult to exist because they also had other universes they could conquer? Those questions loaded another burden onto Crimson's shoulders and unlike other times he couldn't make them go away by finding answers - because no one could give those answers to him. He had asked the others to make sure he was right with that and as hed expected they had no clue what to do if some creatures were in different universes even after the Kathrenian universe was destroyed.

"We don't have time now to worry about that," Lilith said. "As soon as we have that time, we probably shouldn't use it for researching because the less we talk or think about the Cult, the less the chances are for it to come back. I can explain to you why that is the case another time." And she walked back outside, almost being beheaded by one of the knives of one of the creatures.

The weapon flew into the room and also almost seriously injured Crimson if he hadn't drawn aside after he heard the blade cutting through the air. It was hard to believe for him that the place where they felt safe for months now was the place where they were constantly attacked. The creatures knew that they as objectors planned something and that's why they wanted to kill them.

What had Sheila said? In the Kathrenian universe it was impossible for the creatures to read human's thoughts? Crimson now started to doubt whether or not that was true.

After this one knife had almost nailed him to the bed he decided to move in further back in the room. It was darker there, but blind as he was that didn't matter to him anymore.

In the next three days there were less creatures there which made it easier to set an end to the lives of each and every one of them. They had more time to talk about what was supposed to happen and the number of questions in Crimson's head only had increased.

That's why he took his chance in those few days when there weren't all that many creatures around to ask the others, not knowing when they would be attacked again. "If Lilith and me teleport ourselves back to earth, will we be safe there? I'm sure there are people just like Barthen who work for the Cult and are on the planet we want to get back to. There must be hundreds of them working in the Province."

"We won't go back there, that's for sure," Lilith said and immediately corrected herself: "We'll probably end up there as soon as we set our feet on earth again, but we'll run away from there - to the northeast. We should be safe there for a few days or weeks and after that amount of time has passed, the others will join us and we'll fight everyone who works for the Cult. Either we eradicate or - if we go to a peaceful place - we bring the people to prison. It would be better to kill them though because, as I said, the less people know about the Cult the better. That's also the reason why we have to split up after our work is done."
