Are you fucking kidding me Riley?!" I take the toothbrush out of my mouth and look over at my sister. "What? I'm just brushing my teeth?" She rolls her eyes then glares. "It's already eight! Your school starts at 8:20! You already missed the fucking bus! This is the third time this week! And it's Wednesday!-" I block out her ranting by loudly resuming brushing my teeth. I heard her let out a frustrated groan before leaving me alone in the bathroom. "We leave in ten!" 'Good enough for me.'
I rinse out my mouth and run a brush through my black hair, not having the energy to style it. I slip on my sweater and make my way through the house to the kitchen. I slip on my boots while Raelyn is ranting about me being late again. I turn away from her to the closet, I grab both my bag and coat out of it. I sling my bag over my shoulder and hold my coat in my arm.
"I got a call this morning. From the school." Raelyn says to me as she holds open the door. "Oh yeah? What about this time?" I step out of the house onto the crunchy snow. "There's a new teacher starting at your school today. For your art class. I hear he's pretty nice." I chuckle as I open the back door to set my stuff down. "Is that all? Had me worried I was in trouble or something." I close the door and sit down in the passenger side. "Oh that wasn't all they wanted to inform me about. You're also doing poorly in your English class. Unlike your music class that you love so much. English is an essential credit. Mr. Iero offered to give you extra help during your lunch break next week." I glance over at her. "I accepted." "Are you kidding me?! My lunch hour is the only point of freedom I have during the day!" I can see her bite her cheek to hold back from yelling back at me. "You should have thought of that before you ignored all your assignments and ditched class Riley! I barely had enough money to send you to high school and I'm not gonna let you waste it!"
I didn't respond. I'm already going to be late, the last thing I need is a shitty attitude to the new teacher because of an argument. I'm not a delinquent or a rebel by any means. I just ditch class to avoid getting lectured by my teachers for my missing work. It was a good twenty minute drive to my school and I know Raelyn is in no mood to get coffee. The school came into sight despite the already heavy falling snow. We park and I quickly get out and grab my stuff. "I'll text you okay?" I nod. "Drive safe!" I call out and wave as she drives away.
I walk into the school and make my way down to the office. "Miss Rockwell. Late again? That's the third time this week." I send a small smile at Mrs. Holt. "School starts to early. Ten would be a much better time!" She lets out a small chuckle. "Mr. Way heard all about you from Mr. Sanderson. He should be prepared for you to show up late but here's a note." She hand me a note over her deck and sends me on my way.
I make sure to stop at my locker to gather my book before finally making my way to the art room. I freshen up briefly and knock loudly on the door. I hear loud footsteps from the other side before the door swings open. I must say, he was not what I was expecting. The now open door reveals a taller man, but definitely young. Maybe Raelyn's age? His hair though was the most notable. I've never seen hair so bright. It was basically the colour of the snow outside. His eyes were a golden shade of hazel. I admit. He's attractive. But not my type. In addition he's my teacher and probably twice my age.
"Hi there!" He smiles brightly at me. "Hi, sorry I'm late. I'm-" He walks out and closes the door behind him. "Riley Rockwell. I've heard all about you from Mr. Sanderson and a few of the other teachers. It's nice to meet you! I'm Mr. Way!" He hold out his hand for me to shake. I let out a nervous chuckle and shake his hand. He uses his other hand to cup the back of my hand and holds it for a little longer then I would have liked. His eyes never left mine, he barely even blinked while looking at me. I already felt uncomfortable around him.
Once he lets go of my hand stares at me for a few more seconds. I feel a bit creeped out but I don't really blame him. My eyes are my only notable feature. Unlike my sister who has green/blue for eye colour. I have a sharp, icy blue for eye colour. I never really liked how I looked, but I am in love with my own eyes. He smiles again before flipping around and holds the door open for me. I keep my eyes on the ground as I make my way over to my seat. I smile at my best friend Daniel before sitting down. "Dude, do you see him!" I look over at my other best friend Jade. "He's fucking hot!" I couldn't help but roll my eyes. "He's a little strange to be honest." She looks over at me. "He's interesting! I mean how often do you see someone dye there hair that white! And his eyes!-" "Jade!" "What?!" "Shut up! He's gonna hear you!" She just rolls her eyes.
"I know you're already in three months and you already have a new teacher, but I promise all of you! You will have fun! Unlike the lesson plans Mr. Sanderson left with me-" His eyes scan the room before falling on me. "I plan an doing more hands on things." He pauses. "Rather then work sheets. Art is supposed to be fun!" I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable and shift around in my seat. "So for our first assignment! I would like you to paint something unique that you feel best represents you. It could be a joke you're well known for, a talent or even a body part you find unique about yourself! It must be appropriate!" He exclaims with a chuckle and the students laugh with him but I stay silent. "You are allowed to create your art piece with whatever material you like! If you have any questions please feel free to ask me, I'll be up at my desk." He breaks his gaze and turns to sit at his desk. I should be excited for this class with how amazing it's going to be. But something about Mr. Way has something about him that just feels... off.
