"I hope you all have a pleasant night and I hope you and your loved ones make it home safe. I'll either be seeing you tomorrow or on Monday! Oh! And don't forget, your project is due on Monday so take these next few days to get it done!" Mr. Toro says to us as students file out of the classroom. It was finally the end of the day, but rather then feeling excited I couldn't help but feel dread. Maybe I can explain to Mr. Way and make the conversation quick. I can't even see outside the windows at this point. Walking home in nothing but my sweater would be absolute hell.
I push past the students in the crowded hall. Avoiding anybody who tried talking to me. I reach the art room and go to open the door. But to my misfortune the door was locked. The halls were near empty by this point and I felt the frustration grow. "Are you fucking kidding me?!" I groan angerly while kicking the door. I rest my head against the glass and let out a sigh. Does everything have to go wrong today?
I let out a small gasp when I feel something brush against my waist. "I don't appreciate the abuse you're giving my door or the language you just used." His voice was low and right against my ear. I could feel his coffee scented breath brush across my cheek. My heart immediately began to race and my breath hitched in my throat. "Excuse me, Riley." I heard the click of the lock and the door swung open in front of me. I didn't waste a second walking into the classroom. Anything to be more then a foot away from him.
I heard the door click shut behind me and the sound of the lock turning. "Listen Mr. Way-" When I turn to face him I find him only inches away from me. "Woah." I quickly take a few steps back as he lets out a chuckle. "Listen Riley. I wanted to talk to you about your language in my classroom. I know it's my first day and I know you may still be use to Mr. Sanderson's rules but things are going to be a little different now that I'm in charge." He takes a step towards me, his eyes never leaving mine. "You know Miss Rockwell, you have very beautiful eyes?" I chuckle nervously as I take a step back, accidentally running into a desk. "Is that what you're going to be doing your project on? Your Icy Blues?" "Y-Yeah actually. I planned on doing that." I step aside and create more distance between us. "I also don't appreciate you kicking my door like that." His eyes looked cold but his face held a smile. "Look Mr. Way, I'm sorry. I was just frustrated, things aren't really falling in my favor today. But I promise it won't happen again, I swear!" I say with honesty.
He looks at me up and down before turning to the window. "I couldn't help but over hear you and your friends talking. You don't have a way home, do you?" I glance at the window then at the clock. "No. I don't. But it's not far, I can just walk." He chuckles. "You're only in a sweater, and it seems you forgot your coat. I know your bus was the first to leave and it's to dangerous. I kept you here to long the least I can do is give you a ride." I glance at him, the window and the clock. I guess it's better then walking. "If it isn't too much of a hassle I wouldn't mind." His grin grows wider and he claps his hands together excitedly. "Perfect! I just have to gather a few things and I'm sure you do too. Just meet me at the front entrance in about ten minutes." I only nod my head in return.
I quickly walk past him and unlock the door. I make my way to my locker and shove almost everything into my bag. If there wasn't going to be school for the next four days then I might as well bring all my schoolwork home to catch up or even get ahead. I couldn't help but feel anxious. With how the weather is I have no idea how long this drive would be. I walk down the empty halls, waving to the occasional teacher. I reach the front and see Mr. Way already waiting for me. His eyes lit up and he smiled at me as I approached. "Ready?" I nod in response. I pull my hood up as he holds open the door for me. I walk out and let him go past me as I had no clue which car would be his. "Keep up Riley." He says to me as he slows down to walk beside me. "I'm trying- Shit!" I exclaim loudly as I step onto an icy patch of the parking lot causing me to lose my footing. I was bracing my back for impact but felt warm arms wrap around my waist instead. Keeping me from hitting the ground. I'm not heavy but I'm not light by any means. He was pretty strong. I quickly regain my footing but Mr. Way didn't let go just yet. I lightly place my hands on his while holding my head down to shield my face from the fast falling snow. "T-Thank you Mr. Way." I say with a small chuckle as he finally lets me go. "Be more careful. I don't want to see you hurt."
We continue walking all the way to the end of the parking lot where a sleek, black car was parked. He quickly opens the passenger door for me and I quickly sit inside setting my bag down at my feet. He opens the back door and grabs a pair of gloves and a snowbrush before leaving once again. I look around at the windows as he brushes them off one by one. Once he got to mine he smiles and waves at me which I chuckle and return. Once the car was cleaned off enough he puts the brush in the back and sits down in the drivers seat. "It's pretty wicked out there. How far do you live from here?" "I live on 118 Cemetery Drive." "Not to far. But with this weather who knows how ling it'll take. I don't mind. At least I can get to know you a little better." I chuckle nervously. "Yeah, I guess so."
"So who do you live with?" I glance over at him. "I live with my sister. My parents aren't really in the picture." He sends me a sympathetic smile. "How old are you?" I ask him. "I'm Twenty-Seven and I have a brother who is seven years younger then me." (In this book. Mikey is 20, Gerard is 27, Frank is 25 and Ray is 27.) I only nod in response. The car fell silent after that. It was kind of a weird question to ask a teacher now that I think about it. "Are you seeing anyone?" My head snaps to face him with my mouth slightly open. I wasn't but something was telling me to lie. A teacher shouldn't be asking something like that? "I am actually. For a few months now." Though he was still wearing gloves I could see his grip on the steering wheel tighten as he became silent once again. We had already been driving for half an hour now and after seeing what street we were on, we were only have way to my home. "Thanks again for driving me home Mr. Way." "Please, out of school call me Gerard. Hearing the mister just makes me feel old." He says with a chuckle. I've never been told to call a teacher by their first name before. Well other then Frank but that's different.
"Thanks... Gerard." I look over at him and see his jaw clenched and his legs stiff. "So who is this guy. That you're seeing?" I didn't know what to say. I panicked. "Daniel." "Daniel Holt? The one you sit beside in my class?" I nod in response. He is so gonna kill me when I tell him about this. He only hums in response. I was feeling more and more uncomfortable by the minute but we aren't far now. The car fell silent once more but this time, that's how it remained. Just barely I was able to see my house come into view. "That one right there." I tell Gerard while pointing. He pulls into the drive way and I can see my sisters car and her waiting on the front porch. As soon as we park she jogs over to us. Before I could open my door she opens it for me. "Are you fucking dumb! I called and texted you and you didn't fucking answer! Do you know how worried I was- Oh hi!" Raelyn looks over at Gerard in embarrassment. "Hi there. I'm Mr. Way. Riley's art teacher." He holds his hand out across me to shake my sisters hand. "I'm Raelyn. Riley's sister." She says while shaking his hand. " I am so sorry you had to do this." "Oh it's no trouble at all. I'm just happy to see Riley home safe." He smiles. "Do you wanna come in for a few minutes? I just cooked up some dinner and it's the least I can do for having you drive my sister home in this horrid weather." He smiles at her. "That would be wonderful thank you."
