Chapter 12 : Little Queen

Edmund, being surprisingly fast for that skinny of a boy, arrived in camp before me, so when I gallop in, pulling on the reigns to steady Philip, I eye the White Witch herself.

Her features are something to be desired, and though white is the colour of purity she looks nothing of the sort.

"Jadis.. Jadis!" A dwarf chants from by her side and Philip rears, I pull on the reigns and stroke his head.

"Woah, Philip." I mutter, not letting my gaze fall from the witch. Everything her eyes touch seems to grow colder.

I dismount from Philip and walk over to the Pevensies as the Witch rises from her chair and steps down, her fur coat glistening with frost and leaving dew on the grass.

"You have a traitor in your midst, Aslan." She says, looking distastefully at Edmund, her gaze like one would look at a disobedient dog. The creatures gazes on Edmund and I stand beside him, head held high.

"You can't protect him forever, girl." She hisses at me, her ice necklace making a cold sound, her breath like frost.

"Maybe not, but I sure as hell will go down fighting." I say calmly, fixing my gaze into a cold stare.

"His offence was not against you." Aslan speaks, every head turning back to him.

"Have you forgotten the Deep Magic?" Jadis inquires and Aslan growls, scrapping a paw on the ground.

"Do not cite the Deep Magic to me, Witch. I was there when it was made." He states, his teeth flashing at her, the Witch smiles cruely.

"Then you will know that the boy belongs to me." She turns to the crowd. "That boy," She points at Edmund. "Will die on the Stone Table."

"Come and take him then." I challenge, pulling out my sword.

"You think that a simple threat will deny me my right, little queen?" She laughs, her voice like snow. "Aslan knows that if I do not have blood as the law demands, all of Narnia will be overturned, and perish, in fire and water." Jadis shouts and the creatures around me twitch in agitation, Aslan growls again.

"Enough, I shall talk with you alone." He says an they retreat into his tent.

Many minutes pass before the Witch and Aslan emerge from the tent.

When they do, with a cold smile on the Witch's face, I jump up from my seat on the ground, eager to receive the verdict.

"The Witch has denounced her claim on Edmund." Aslan announces and the Narnians in the camp cheer.

"How will I know your promise will be kept?" Jacks asks Aslan, her face a mix of fury and a scowl.

In reply Aslan roars at her, and she falls back into her seat.

The crowd in the camp laughs and cheers. I frown, my brow crinkling, before turning after Aslan. Only to see his tail disappearing into his tent.

After the events of today, I lie in bed, restless, watching Lucy and Susan's sleeping form before something passes our tent by. I sit up on my elbow and watch it disappear before slipping out of bed, shaking Lucy and Susan awake.

I inform them of the shadow and they elect to follow it, curious to find out where it would lead us.
It doesn't take us long to figure out it was Aslan, whom, for some peculiar reason, was easing into the forest.
He stops and Lucy snaps a twig under foot.

"Aren't you suppose to be in bed?" He chuckles, and we look at him sheepishly.

"We couldn't sleep." Susan explains, and I suddenly feel warmer.

"Please, Aslan. Couldn't we come with
you?" Lucy asks, a hopeful look on her face.

"I would be glad of the company tonight." Aslan replies after a minute, before me, Lucy, and Susan walk beside him; our finger trailing in his beautiful golden fur.
