Chapter 3 : A Game Of Cricket

I awake from a dreamless sleep to the sound of Lucy talking to Peter, I was never a heavy sleeper since my father died, I even had bouts of insomnia some days.

"Peter, Peter Wake up! It's there, It's really there!" I hear her tell him and I get up from bed, open my door and pad down the stairs and down the corridor, pushing the door to the boys room open.

"Lucy? What's going on?" I ask, my voice muffled by sleep, and she looks at me. Peter rolls over still half asleep.

"Lucy what are you talking about?" He asks sleepily and my eyebrow raises. Lucy found Narnia, Again.

"Narnia, It's all in the Wardrobe like we told you." Is at quietly, staring Peter right in the eye. Peter blinks at me and then a scowl forms on his normally calm face.

"First Lucy, Now you?" He says spits, bitterness in his voice.

"It's real I tell you!" Lucy says, tears springing to her eyes as Susan walks in, a kinder look on her face, a sweet smile.

"Oh Lucy, I think you've been dreaming." Susan tries to soothe and Lucy scowls.

"No, I wasn't. I saw Mister Tumnus again and this time- Edmund went too!" She speaks defiantly, pointing at the ebony haired boy as every eye fell on him.

"You saw the faun?" Peter asks and I have a slight inkling of hope.

"Well, he didn't actually go there with me." Lucy says, and then she frowns. "What were you doing Edmund?" Lucy asks him, a confused look on his face.

"I-I was just playing along. You know what little children are like these days, they just don't know when to stop pretending." Edmund says, sitting on the bed looking smugly at Lucy.

The poor girl bursts into tears, fleeing the room. I give Peter a pointed look before leaving, ignoring the glares.

The next morning the boys and Susan are playing cricket as me and Lucy sit to the side, me with a book and her fiddling with several blades of grass.

"Peter winds up, goes the bowl!" Peter says in an announcer voice, and I roll my eyes slightly. Peter throws the ball at Edmund and it hits him in the shin, making him grab at it in pain.

"A little low Peter." I comment and Peter smirks.

"Ow!" Edmund grumbles, running his shin.

"Whoops! Wake up, Dolly Day Dream!" Peter says, a smile on his face, Edmund scowls and drops the bat.

"Can't we play hide and seek again?" He asks, and Peter looks at him like he's suddenly started spouting French.

"I thought you said that it was a kids game." Peter points out and I look up from my book at Lucy. Her eyes are wide, sparkling and looking up at the sky. I bite my lip and turn back to my book.

"Besides, We can all use the fresh air." Susan says and Edmund glares at her.

"Not like there's air inside." Edmund scowls and I shake my head, looking back towards Lucy with a worried look on my face.

"Ready?" Peter asks as he twirls the ball in his hands and Edmund hits the bat against the ground, readying himself for the throw.

"Are you?" Edmund smirks.
Peter pitches hard and Edmund swings the bat.

It all happens so quickly, I stagger up as the ball breaks a stained-glass window, smashing into something made of metal.

I glare at Edmund and Peter and we rush up to the room and look at the sight. A broken suit of armour lays on the floor, pieces scattered every which way.

I turn to Peter to shout at him about how that piece of history cost my grandfather thousands and how, in the matter of 30 seconds, he lowered its value to less than one hundred. I freeze when I hear the clattering of high heeled boots on wood, my eyes widen and look at the siblings.

"Macready!" I shout and I take off running, grabbing Peter and Edmund's hands as I pull then down corridors, Lucy and Susan running behind us. Macready's footsteps seem to follow us wherever we go and, out of breath, I throw open the room that contains the wardrobe. I immediately get several looks from Peter and Susan as I drop the boys hands and stagger into the wardrobe door, pulling the door open.

"You've got to be kidding me!" Susan protests and I glare at her before pushing her in.

"Would you rather get told off?" I ask her, raising an eyebrow. She shuts up.

I shuffle Lucy, Edmund and Peter in before getting in myself, remembering Lucy's lesson on wardrobe doors and leaving it open a crack.

"Shuffle back." Edmund asks and I wince as I feel someone's elbow jab into my side.

"Ow, Someone stepped on my foot!" Susan squeaks in pain as we continue to move backwards through the fur coats.

"Keep going back." I say quietly, my foot gets twisted with Edmund's and I trip, falling onto his chest. I flush bright pink before pulling myself up and dusting myself off.

"Edmund, Susan and Peter Welcome To Narnia!" Lucy announces and they all look at me and Lucy apologetically.

"Will a sorry suffice?" Peter asks me, a small smile on his face. Slowly, I return it.

"Well let's just see." I say as Lucy discreetly puts a snowball in my hand. I lean in, as if I'm going to kiss him, before I quickly shove the snowball in his face, bursting out into fits of laughter. "But that might!" I laugh and he wipes the snow off of his face, grinning.

After that snowballs start flying through the air, each one hitting their intended target.
And for once, I let my grief go. I throw snowballs and I laugh, I enjoy myself.

And I realise, when I smacked that snowball into Peter's face, that was the first time I'd laughed in years.
