Chapter 5 : Getting to know

As Gina was walking outside about to go home since Miss Jenn cancelled the rehearsal, she heard someone scream. Startled, she came around looking for who it was and then she saw someone on the rooftop, near the edge. She looked around if there is any other person who heard it and there was no one but her.

Out of instinct, she ran back towards the school going to the rooftop thinking to herself that that person better not jump or she would never be able to forgive herself. She ran as fast as she could putting that track and field experience to good use. She went storming through the stairs and finally landed by the door of the rooftop. She quickly opened it and there he was, still standing on the edge.

"Hey?! Are you okay? What are you doing?" She asked the guy
"I'm fine, go away!" He said
"That doesn't seem to be the case, why don't you come down and we'll talk about it." She said, nervous that the guy would jump
He faced her, eyes red from crying, and then he smiled.
"Hey, I know you." And he jumped away from the edge.
"Ej?" A surprised Gina blurted out
"It's alright, there's no need for you to worry. I'm okay now." Ej said
Gina held her chest, relieved that he was alright and didn't do anything stupid.

"Gosh, you almost gave me a breakdown there. Do you know how fast I ran just to get here?!" Her voice a little angry now.

"Well, I didn't ask for you to be here. So that's on you" Ej said, with a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

"Oh yeah, well good luck then with whatever it is you're about to do here." Gina giving back the sarcasm.

She turned her back to him and was about to storm back down when Ej held her arm. She was taken aback and faced him with a confused look

"Hey, I'm sorry. I was just messing with you." Ej said
"That wasn't funny. I thought something bad happened that is why I darted going here. It's alright, apology accepted." Gina said sincerely.
"What can I do to make it up?" He asked.
"Give me a ride home?" She said
"Okay, I'll just grab my jacket. He added

Just as they were about to leave, Ej went to the door and found out that it was locked. The two of them were accidentally locked at the rooftop.

"Oh shoot. It's locked. Somebody must've hit the lock." Ej said
"Uuugghh!" Gina said in frustration.
"I guess we're stuck here for the night." Ej said, with not so much that he could do.

He sat beside the door and motioned Gina to sit next to him.
Gina followed, and sat down next to him.

The only light that they have is from the moon, it was a full moon that night. Gina looked up and stared at the moon, awestruck at how beautiful it looks. Ej did the same, but redirected his gaze upon Gina.

"Thank you." Ej said quietly
"For what?" Gina asked, still looking at the moon
"For going here and checking if I was okay." He said
"I would've done it for anyone. Even for an enemy." She said
"Yeah, but still, thank you." He added.

Ej noticed that Gina was trembling due to the cold wind at the rooftop and that she wasn't wearing her jacket.

"Where's your jacket?" He asked
"Oh, I dropped it while I was running towards here, it was kind of slowing me down so I had to get rid of it."
"I see." Ej shuffled to get up and he took off his jacket to put around Gina's shoulder and back.
"Thanks." Gina said thankfully.

"So, where are you really from? Everybody seems to be so intrigued by you." Ej asked Gina
"Really? Ha!" Gina chuckled. Ej finds it adorable and cute.
"Yeah. Ashlyn seems to think so and it seems like you intimidate a lot of the theater kids." He said
"Do I intimidate you?" She asked him, challenging
"No, not really. I was just little curious. Though you really come across as intimidating. I'm a guy but I'm not dense like every other guy back there." He said, in a matter of fact tone.

"I see. Well, I'm originally from Arizona but my mom works for the military so we kinda have to move a lot. I've been to 6 different schools in a span of 2 years so I don't have that much many friends like you guys do. So I gotta be strong for me and my mom, and you know, be independent." She said.
"By the way, you're a Caswell, Ashlyn is too. Are you guys related or something?" She asked Ej
"Yeah, she's my cousin." He replied
"So, how about you? I see you're popular with the girls in this school..." She said
"You just figured that one out did 'ya?" He replied
"Hahaha. Not really, I just saw the looks those girls gave Nini when she's with you." Gina said, laughing.

Nini. Upon hearing that name, Ej felt his heart sink. His face went forlorn and, Gina saw it.
"Hmmm. Nini." Gina can feel the sadness in Ej's voice. And she put her hand over his. She didn't say anything, she just held his hand much to Ej's surprise. A comfortable silence between the two of them.

"I won't ask you what happened..." Gina said
"It's alright, it's over between the two of us. She loves someone else and I think I already know but I guess I'm just afraid to admit it. Eventually, I had to let her go." The sadness in Ej's voice breaking the silence between the two of them.

"I don't even know why I'm telling you this but, yeah, that's that." He added.

"I see. It's alright, everything's gonna be alright." Gina yawned, feeling a little sleepy. A few minutes passed, she then fell asleep. She was just sitting with her back at the concrete wall, and Ej felt that she was asleep. After a few minutes he finds a shivering Gina in the cold air. He tried looking for something to cover the ground and alas he found one and laid it on the ground. He sat back down and laid Gina's head upon his lap for her to be comfortable and he had his back on the wall. Looking up, he noticed that the moon was extra beautiful this night, it was glowing and looks like it has a ring of light on it. He smiled and looked down upon Gina, he noticed that her hair was right across her face and he took it and laid it right back on her ear. Her face was angelic, he thought to himself. She is beautiful. And he didn't notice, but a smile came across his face.

This was their first solid interaction, he thought and they usually come across each other in a very unlikely manner. The first time, she was pissed and then this time, he was. That thought made him chuckle. He fell asleep about an hour of contemplating and staring at Gina's face and fixing his jacket upon her. And the two of them were sound asleep under the moon.
