Caitlin noticed that Jay was more distant and had to work more late nights at the office. She had quit medical school to pay full attention to her family. She was doing the dishes when he heard hid phone ring. She didn't recognise the number and answered his phone. She heard a woman voice that she didn't know "Hey baby, where are you?"
"You called my husband right?" Caitlin asked the woman on the phone.
"Oh my god" The woman said in her French accent
"Jay?" She asked double checking that they knew who he was. "Who are you? what's your name?"
"I'm so sorry I..." The lady said stuttering on the phone
"Don't deny it you've been caught in the act." Caitlin said strictly on the phone. "Please just tell me that, you owe me at least that"
"It's Darcell and I am very sorry" she said and hung up the phone. Ellie was asleep so Caitlin was off duty, she opened a bottle of wine and poured herself a glass. She finished the glass and saw some of Ellies toys on the floor and started cleaning them up.
Jay came back to their house and Caitlin on the floor just starring at the wooden blocks. He walked up to her and said "hey"
"She called you, Darcell" Caitlin said showing no emotion
"I guess you're late" she said. Caitlin just wanted him to say it wasn't true. That he wasn't cheating on her. But instead he said nothing at all and she started crying.
"She's not important" He said sitting down next to her "Your important and Elile"
"I must be brain dead, I mean I must be like the biggest moron because I thought that we were happy" Caitlin said crying. "You said I was safe with you!"
"You are, you are, I promise" Jay says engulfing Caitlin in a tight hug "I'm sorry" he said in her hair as she cried into his shoulder.
Jay got back home and Caitlin went to go hug her husband. "I can smell her" Caitlin said and walked into the kitchen.
"What?" Jay asked confused
"Her perfume, Darcell or whatever" She said angry
"We just had a drink, I swear" Jay said
"Stop it" Caitlin said fed up with his lies "I caught you and there is no way you can talk your way out of this. How many Jay? How many are there? How many have there been?"
"What does it matter?" Jay says "It's not like what we were doing wasn't great but men and women have different needs, Darcell is willing to satisfy those needs and maybe it is better for everyone this way"
"Well it's better for you, you have a good deal don't you?" Caitlin yells angry at her husband who she dose't even know. "You get to fool around while I am here taking care of our house and kid. No more, that's it"
"Calm down Caitlin" Jay said
"No I will not call down, I'm not going to sit here anymore and just take it. Sorry I love you, but I am not a doormat. I am your wife, you cannot do this to me anymore! " Caitlin said and Jay slapped her in the face. She put her hand where he slapped her and was shocked at this.
"What? I can't hit you?" Jay said
"No you can not" Caitlin said showing strength and he punched her this time. She fell to the floor and this time it caused a small cut on her face and a bruise around her eye.
"You want to fight? I'm a man honey it's no contest. You have to understand and I thought you did. I make the money so I make the rules. You with me?" Jay says and she nods
"What if I don't like the rules?" She trembles
"If you don't like them? Well sweetie life isn't just stuff we like right? We have to take the good and the bad, that's what marriage is" Jay said and they both got up "today might be a bad day and a tomorrow a good one"
"Tomorrow will be great" Caitlin says very monotone looking into his eyes as he nods.
"I'll be back in a few hours" Jay said and went out the back door. So she doesn't do something stupid he took her drivers license, phone and anything else she could use to do something he didn't like. Caitlin went straight for the landline and was dialling a number. Jay watches her and knocks on the window which frightens her. She opens the window and he asks "Who are you calling?"
"Your mother, she wanted to see Ellie tomorrow I was going to cancel" Caitlin responded
"You know love is a powerful thing, you that's what happened here I just can't live without you" Jay said before leaving and closing the window. Caitlin didn't call Jay's mother because she needed to talk to someone. She didn't recognise her husband. He abused her. Caitlin just melted into the floor and let all her tears out.
