SAMMYI cried when I walked into that delivery room. I had always thought babies were cute but never had that urgent feeling to hold one, or have one. But Nash and Kennedy's baby was different. Newborns are usually a bit scary looking but he wasn't. He was beautiful as he lay sleeping in the little bassinet all wrapped up tight with a little blue hat on his head.
I'd never seen Nash look so proud, not even when he married Kennedy. He stood next to his son and the look he gave Kennedy was nothing short of pure admiration. He introduced us all to their son, Ethan. I know I responded something along the lines of how cute he was, because he truly was.
I wiped at the tears as I continued to stare down at the little miracle.
"Ken," I said and turned to my best friend. "Congratulations. He's absolutely perfect."
She smiled. It was obvious that she was tired but she had a glow to her that I'd never seen before.
"Isn't he?" Nash asked, proud as a peacock.
"Let me see my nephew," Jackson urged behind me and I stepped closer to Kennedy to give him room at the bassinet.
Jackson made some comment about Ethan being so small and how come Kennedy had been so big but I didn't pay attention. Mitch was still hesitating at the door. His facial expression was almost pained, and I could see moisture filling his eyes. I wanted to go over and hug him, but Kennedy beat me to it when she asked "You okay, Mitch?" And that snapped him out of whatever phase he'd been in.
Kennedy's read on Mitch didn't surprise me. They had a great friendship thanks to how close Mitch and Nash were. What did surprise me was that she asked Mitch if he wanted to hold her newborn son and that he accepted. But as soon as Ethan was put into Mitchell's arms I could tell it had been the right move.
Watching Mitch hold that little baby in his big arms was like nothing I'd ever experienced before. I had been aroused and wanted things before, but it didn't even compare to the tumultuous feelings inside of me as I watched Mitch coo to the baby. It might have had something to do with what Mitch had admitted earlier. But him right there in that chair with baby Ethan in his arms, that was the hottest thing I'd ever seen. My panties went damp and I could feel my ovaries exploding.
I wanted that to be my future.
Mitchell's large arm muscles flexed under Ethan's tiny body but the look on his face was vulnerable. I couldn't help but want to be near him. To be everything he needed me to be.
I stepped closer and peeked over his shoulder as he held Ethan like he was the most fragile thing in the world. And I guess he was. To all of us in that room, Ethan was something special and we'd all do anything for him.
Ethan began to cry and got quickly handed over to his mother. Jackson, Mitch, and I took that as our cue to leave.
"It's so weird, isn't it?" Mitch asked and looked from me to Jackson when we took the elevator downstairs.
I knew what he meant. Everything had changed in just a few hours. Technically not for us since Ethan was Nash and Kennedy's son but it felt like it.
"Yeah, my sister is a mom," Jackson said like he almost couldn't believe it.
"Nash is a dad," Mitchell responded and they both chuckled.
"Never thought I'd see that day," Jackson commented.
"I bet you never thought he'd marry your sister either?" I added and couldn't help but giggle at the look he gave me.
"That's true too."
