Their eyes battled, and their expressions were stoic. The sunlight peering in from the kitchen window created a warm atmosphere in the living room. The soft fabric of the couch allowed for any movements to be felt by both parties. There they sat, not speaking, and only staring.
"Dude... just give up already... you can't beat me in this; it's hopeless," asserted Jorgia. Elijah narrowed his eyes slightly, making sure not to close them before quickly opening them up, even wider than Jorgia's.
"I'm fine, Jorgia, but you look like you're gonna blink any second now."
The two of them were in a staring contest. The quiet atmosphere of the living room lacked any distractions, which had allowed Elijah and Jorgia to continue the game for much longer than either of them thought it would. Jorgia leaned in closer to Elijah's face in an attempt to make him blink.
"What... what are you doing? If you try anything funny, then I'll instantly win."
"Yeah, yeah, calm down, I'm simply using my secret technique," she said as she began to quiver her eyelids.
"Shit, this is hard... we've been going for so long now it feels like my eyes are gonna fall out of my head. How can he stare so comfortably for so long without feeling anything?"
"Don't blink... Jorgia. Don't blink. Don't blink. Don't blink," said Elijah, raising his voice with every repetition. Jorgia leaned back and bit down on her bottom lip. The burning sensation in her eyes was unbearable.
"Ooo looks like you're struggling there, Jorgia."
"Will you shut up? I told you I'm fine; I can do this all day!"
"My eyes, my eyes! Why did I say that!? I'll be lucky if I can go another minute with this" she thought. Suddenly, a knock on the door caught the attention of the two of them. But despite this, their heads remained forward, and the staring continued.
"It's open, the door is open, come in!" shouted Jorgia, being careful not to close her eyes in the process.
"Hey, guys! Uh... what are you do-"
"Staring contest, Lucas! Hehe, Elijah is gonna choke any second now."
"Oh, I see."
He walked up to behind the couch and looked at them. Suddenly, he started to snicker before it turned into a full-blown laughing fit.
"Hahahahahaha!!! Jorgia, look at your face! You look like you've wanted to go to the bathroom for hours! Hahahahah!!!"
A small smile began to form on Elijah's face, and Jorgia's had a serious sneer. And without notice, the front door opened, and in walked Vanessa. In her left hand was a folded-up map. From her view, she saw Elijah and Jorgia staring at each other while Lucas was leaning on the couch laughing. She looked up and shook her head before yelling:
"What are you morons doing?!?"
Her sudden loud voice caught Jorgia's attention, causing her to flinch and blink.
"Yes! I won!" cried Elijah with a smile. He leaned back into the couch and started to rub his eyes.
"Noooooo!!!! That's bullshit! I should've won. Vanessa! You distracted me!" yelled Jorgia.
"What the- if I messed you guys up, then how come Elijah didn't blink then?" asked Vanessa, pointing at him.
"Uhhhh... Anyway, what's that you got there, V?"
"It's a map of the city. I figured it would help with planning," she answered, walking towards the rest of the group.
"That's a good idea. Luckily, we already know or think that one of them is at the clock tower. Celine said, 'The World' and 'The Fool' right Jorgia?" asked Lucas.
