You sat with me on the beach.

Waves crashing around us,

You traced patterns only you could figure out onto my skin.

Reds and oranges danced across your porcelain features.

But the sun couldn't compare to the way your smile lit up.

Your face set off dozens of fireworks within me.

No matter how long I'll know you,

Butterflies will swarm my stomach.

The salt water from the waves will drench my body,

Face raw and stinging from the words you throw at me,

Like I'm a wild animal ready to attack you.

The claws you think will slash at you

dig into the palms of my hands,

Bruises line up and down my body.

Your words flow around my head again and again,

The way the Earth orbits around the Sun,

Except I look forward to seeing the sun set and the moon rise.

Stars would spring up in the sky.

Galaxies start disappearing faster than you can say Barry Allen.

The waves continue to crash,

Hiding some of the most horrid secrets the Earth can hold.

The intro to that one Weezer song holds just as many.

It plays in a loop,

Embedding itself into my brain,

Lyrics etched into as many notebooks they can possibly fill up,

The same way your words scratch at my chest and throat,

Trying to draw my struggling breath out of my lungs.

I listen for the lull of the waves to draw me

From my nightmare, to be my knight in shining armor,

But all I can see is you.

The reflection of the sun off your paleness blinds me.

I've been searching for a hero for too long,

When I could have been listening for the water lapping at my feet.
