Posting a trigger warning for this chapter. Please remember, at the start of this book, I said that the werewolf characters in my story will behave quite beastly at times, so please proceed with caution!
Without wasting a single second, I've opened the cell and rushed in. He doesn't look up when I enter. I doubt he has the energy but he angles his body towards the cell entrance, which signals to me that he's awake.
I use the master key to unlock the chains around his wrists, that hold him up. Without them, he tumbles to the ground, finally looking up at me.
Even in his disheveled, weakened state, his eyes take me in, "Kat, what are you doing here?"
I touch his face gently. "I don't have time to talk. We have to go, we have no time. Come on, Dan. Up."
I put an arm of his around my neck, pulling him up.
"Kat, I don't understand how you're here. You shouldn't be here. These people, Kat, they aren't human." He rambles.
"Dan, I know. I promise, I will explain, but right now, you have to move fast okay? Put all your energy into this." I say.
This man. This beautiful man that I have taken comfort in for the past few years, stands in front of me, as only a shell of what he was. His bruises are extensive and he's limping on his foot. I can tell some of his bones are fractured. I have never been more angry at Zyon than I am right now. All I can think about, as immense guilt settles in my stomach, is that Daniel did not deserve this.
I'm so thankful for my wolf currently. Since I have her back, I am able to support most of Daniel's weight. We make it upstairs, going as fast as we can. My eyes narrow in on the back entrance. We move towards it.
As we planned, most of the guards and warriors are out trying to recapture freed prisoners. The coast is clear, or so I thought.
A couple of steps away from the front door, I hear a wolf pop up behind me. I turn, balancing Daniel against the wall.
The wolf's eyes focus in on me and Daniel. I notice as pieces click together in his head. Then his hand transitions to a claw, his eyes changing to an amber. I look back at Daniel, knowing I'm going to have to fight off this wolf.
"Go. Through that door. Zahra is waiting outside. I'll be right there." I command.
He shakes his head, holding onto his ribs. He steps in front of me, ready to fight of the wolf. My heart breaks for him and for myself. Even in this state, he's ready to defend me.
The guard has started making his way over to us with rapid, determined footsteps.
"Daniel. Now is not the time. GO!" I yell. My eyes glow silver.
Daniel jumps back in shock at the color change. I can see the remaining color in his face drain out of him. His utter disbelief showcases on his face and I know that I have now damaged our relationship for life. First I abandoned and broke up with him via a note, then he was tortured because of me and now he finds out that I am part of the species that captured him. Our entire relationship must feel like a lie to him.
The shock is evident on his face, but he listens. Turning and limping out the door, where I know Zarah will be.
I turn back to the guard, who is now standing in front of me. This will be my first ever fight in years and I have to say I'm kind of looking forward to it.
I whisper to my own wolf, "support me in this. Help me get Dan out of here and after that, I will follow your decisions. I will spend the rest of my life with Zyon."
