Home At Last
Kuki knocked on the door, they waited for nearly a minute that felt like an awkward silent year. They could hear the door start to unlock and they quickly stood up straight. The door opened and Syd's grandma was there with a fearful look on her face. "There you are!" Syd's grandma exclaimed, rushing towards Syd, pulling her in for a tight hug."You had me so worried I nearly called the cops!" Her grandma said, holding Syd tighter. Kuki looked at Syd and could tell she seemed uncomfortable...No, she seemed weirded out. Kuki found that weird. Her grandmas always like this and Syd always goes along with it happily, she's never looked like that before.
Kuki tried telling themself that nothing was wrong, that gut feeling just wouldn't leave them...They decided to speak up. "Um, I'm sorry, we lost track of time." Syd's grandma let go of Syd slowly. "We somehow managed to lose track of time, we're sorry for making you worry." Kuki said, fidgeting with their fingers. "Oh Kuki, I didn't even see you there!" Syd's grandma chuckled.
"Well, at least now I know she was with you, this girl can't take care of herself." She laughed. Kuki awkwardly laughed along, she looked at Syd, who was silent... Normally Syd would speak up or say something, but she was just silent. "Oh! Don't be shy, come on in!" Syd's grandma said, moving to the side, and motioning for Kuki to come in.
"You know what, since it's a saturday... Why don't you sleep over!" Syd's grandma excitedly suggests. Syd's grandma closes the door, and looks at Syd. "Wouldn't that be fun?" She asks. Syd looks back at her confused. "Hmm, wouldn't she have to ask for permission first?" Syd responded, turning to Kuki with annoyance on her face.
"Sh-She's right, I don't think my mom would let me stay..." They answered. "I could just give her a call and we can see!" Syd's grandma smiles, pulling out her phone. "Wait... do you have my mom's number?!" Kuki questions. "Of course! She's started coming to my salon recently and she has my number." Syd's grandma chuckles.
"Oh... Well, isn't that nice." Syd awkwardly laughs. Syd's grandma steps aside for a while, "So..." Kuki awkwardly spoke, Syd turned to them confused. "Look, I can tell that you don't want me to stay, and I doubt my mom would say yes to letting me stay, so I'll stay out of your hair for the rest of the weekend." Kuki said, fidgeting with their fingers, awkwardly.
"Why would you say that?..." Syd asked, tilting her head. Kuki noticed a slight change in her voice, not a bad one, more like an innocent voice, an impression of one. "Well, I-" Kuki was cut off, "Kuki! Your moms asking for you." Syd's grandma said, handing the phone over to them. Kuki stepped aside for a bit. "What happened ma?" Kuki spoke. "Listen, I'm gonna let you stay over for today." Their mom answered. "What? Why?" Kuki asked. "Things are too crazy here right now and I don't want you coming home tonight." Their mom explained. "Is this about what you called me about earlier?" Kuki asked. "Goodnight Kuki, love you." Their mom said before hanging up.
Kuki walked back to Syd and her grandma. "Did she let you stay?" Syd's grandma asked. Kuki looked to Syd, then back to her grandma. "Yeah, she did..." Kuki softly spoke. "Yay! Okay girls have fun!" Syd's grandma excitedly clapped.
Kuki slowly turned to Syd, a look of confusion plastered on both their faces. "There's food in the kitchen if you want any." Syd's grandma said. "I think we'll just go sleep. We're pretty tired from such a long day." Syd said. "Uh yeah, let's go." Kuki said, walking up the stairs, Syd following behind. "Okay, good night!" Syd's grandma said. "Good night!" Kuki yelled as they walked up.
