“New… home?” Maria repeated with wide eyes. She heard Alois and Luca suck in a breath of the same shock she was feeling. Then she heard a sound that made her blood run cold. They both started coughing and wheezing, their lungs desperate for air that was only making it worse. She watched in horror as they fell to the icy floor on their sides, clawing at their chests to try and make the pain stop. She grabbed each of their faces in both hands. She wanted to help them, but she didn’t know what was wrong. She turned back to The Ice King, who was watching with an unamused expression as her brothers writhed in his throne room. “What is wrong with them?”
The Ice King turned his eyes to her, that unamused expression not changing. “The air here is toxic to humans. You are able to breathe it because of your heart, but them... “ He turned his gaze back to her brothers. “Not so much.”
“Please!” she shouted. “Do to them what you did to me.” The Ice King looked back at her with a raised brow. “You brought them here! Obviously for a reason! Do you intend to let them die?”
“I brought them here because you fed the fruit to both of them,” The Ice King remarked in a clipped tone, making her flinch. “None of that was my doing. Do not presume to tell what to do or how to think.”
“I am sorry,” she said, her eyes turning glassy with tears. “Just… please. Do not make them suffer for my decision. If anyone must suffer, let it be me.” The Ice King stared at her for a moment, as if contemplating this. “Please…”
“And what will you trade?” The Ice King smirked. “Are you willing to trade yourself for them again?”
“Anything,” she said immediately, her chest tightening as she heard Alois and Luca’s wheezing start to slow down, not a good sign, in this case. “I will trade anything I have, just please do not make me lose them.” A tear slid down her cheek, her brain unable to process that she saw The Ice King’s expression fall and his eyes widen. “Please…” Her heart fell when he disappeared in a burst of snow. She should have know he would not hear her plea. He had gotten what he wanted. He saw no need for her brothers to live. She jumped back slightly when he suddenly reappeared beside her in a kneeling position, that cloud of snow forming into him once again.
The Ice King broke two shards off the glacier around his neck, much like he had when she talked to him under that branch, and reached toward Luca. She wanted to look away, but found she could not. She hated to watch him shove the shard into her brothers chest, but she relaxed slightly after Luca got over the pain and was taking deep breaths of what was now natural air to him. The King repeated the action with Alois, a sigh of relief escaping her lips when he was breathing as well.
Alois and Luca slowly sat up and looked around, slightly dazed.
“Maria?” Alois called out, his eyes watery from the pain.
“I am right here,” she said as she pulled them both into a hug. They held her tightly as they wrapped their arms around her. “I am right here.” A relieved smile graced her features as another lone tear slid down her cheek. She gasped in shock as her arm was grabbed and she was pulled to her feet, her brothers falling away from her in shock.
“You two stay here,” The Ice King instructed as he looked down at Alois and Luca. “Your sister and I need to have a chat.”
“I cannot just leave them here alone,” she stated, her feet sliding across the ice as she tried to stop herself, but The Ice King was too strong and he had a firm hold on her arm.
The Ice King snapped his fingers and called out, “Lumiar. Cogsworth. Mrs. Potts.” Three people came bustling in, two males and one woman. ((Sorry, guys. I tried to keep out the Disney aspect, but I ran out of the original fairy tale characters to use and, lets face it, these three were made for these roles.))
