"So, Maria, we heard it's your birthday next week," Echo said as she and Ever came into the room with Sebastian.
Maria was sitting on the bed with the covers pulled up over her legs, her knees up to her chest as she leaned back, reading a book on fairytales. Somehow, Sebastian, Alois, and Luca had convinced her she needed to stay in bed until they deemed her healthy again.
"Yeaaaah," Maria said skeptically as she looked up at them.
"What do you want to do for it?" Ever asked as she and Echo sat on the bed with her.
"I don't want-" Maria tried to explain.
"We should throw her a party!" Echo interrupted. Sebastian raised his brow at this.
"Oh, my Bob! We totally should!" Ever exclaimed.
"But I don't want to celebrate-" Maria tried to say again.
"How should we do it?" Echo asked.
They continued to talk as if she weren't there.
"I don't want to celebrate my birthday!" Maria hollered over them.
They stopped talking and turned to look at her as she threw off the covers and left the room, Sebastian following behind her.
"Are you really so against celebrating the day you were born?" Sebastian asked as he followed easily behind her stomping form.
"I told you already. I don't want to even think about my birthday," she replied angrily.
"Then allow me to plan it, My Lady. I can-" Sebastian started to say.
"No," Maria interrupted.
"But, Maria-" he tried to continue.
"Sebastian, I order you not to throw me a party!" Maria ordered as she stopped and turned to face him. Her contracted eye glowed a vibrant purple. She'd never given him a real order until now, saying she didn't like to boss people around. This feeling was foreign to her, and she didn't like it.
The demon before her looked shocked as he stared her in the eye. His eyes glowed a brilliant red as he put a hand to his chest, kneeled on one knee, and bowed.
"Yes, My Lady," he said.
"I'm sorry," she said as he stood back up. "I don't like doing that, but...." She couldn't meet his gaze.
His gloved index and middle fingers lightly strocked up her neck and tilted her chin to look up at him.
"I am My Lady's servant and protector until the day your soul becomes mine. Whatever My Lady wishes of me, I must obey. That is the oath we took to each other," Sebastian said as he removed his glove using his teeth and overlapped the eye that held their contract with the hand that also held their contract symbol. The marks matched perfectly. He felt her eye close and warmth as she leaned into his hand.
"I'm still sorry," she whispered.
" I know. Apology excepted," Sebastian chuckled as he slowly took his hand off her eye and put his glove back on.
She suddenly blushed and turned away him, saying, "I'm just gonna go.... um... that way." She walked quickly down the hall and disappeared around the corner.
He smiled after her for a moment.
"Don't even think about it," he suddenly said, hearing a grunt off annoyance behind him.
"How did you know I was back here?" Ever asked.
"I'm simply one Hell of a demon," Sebastian smiled as he turned his head toward her and walked away.
"Told you ya couldn't scare him!" Echo shouted from the other end of the hallway.
"As Bob as my witness," Ever said dramatically, "I will scare Sebastian Michaelis!" She pointed her finger at the sky with her fist on her hip.
"Well, on the bright side, we know what we're doing for Maria's birthday," Echo said happily, holding up Maria's fairytale book again.
"And the best part is.... Sebastian's not allowed to help us!" Ever exclaimed as the two girls chuckled.
"I heard that," they heard Sebastian say.
The two girls sulked off.
