Maria awoke that night with a start. Her heart was pounding. It felt as if it were going to leap from her chest.

She'd been happy these last few weeks that her sleep had been dreamless.

Now, it seemed, those days were over.

She looked over at the cot Sebastian usually slept in, but found it to be empty. A wave of panic set in as she looked around the room to try to find him.

She left the room and searched the mansion, looking for him.

She eventually came to the parlor, where she saw him, still fully dressed with his shoes on, asleep on the long couch.

His chest was against the cushions, his cheek pressed against the arm of the chair, his feet dangling over the other end of the couch, and his was snoring ever so slightly.

Normally, Maria hated the sound of someone snoring, even if it was only a little, but his was in a charming sort of way.

The pounding of her heart eased quickly as she looked at his sleeping face and heard his rhythmic breathing.

She walked closer to him as she wrapped her arms around herself, her thin nightgown doing nothing to keep her warm as she slightly shivered.

She sat beside the couch as she placed a hand on one of his arms as it draped over the side of the couch.

"Sebastian," she whispered softly as she shock him ever so slightly. He gave a louder snore in reply and nothing else. "Sebastian, wake up." She shock him a little harder as she continued to whisper.

Nothing. It was as if all the life had been drained out of him.

"Sebastian, wake--- Agh!" she screamed as quietly as possible.

Sebastian's arm had snaked around her waist and pulled her with him as he flipped over. So now he was facing the couch while she was sandwiched in between it and him, his arms wrapped possessivly around her.

"Sebastian!" she cried, her voice muffled by his chest being pressed against her face as she tried to push him away.

He scooted over slightly, giving her just enough room to breathe.

She took in large gasps of air until her breathing became normal again.

She looked up at his face. He looked so calm and relaxed as he held her against him.

Usually, whenever he was this close to her, he was stiff and cautious. It was as if he were afraid of breaking her.

She realized his snoring had stopped. She also realized she'd never heard him snore before tonight.

What had changed, she wondered.

Well, he hadn't been in their room... He'd been laying on the couch.... She wasn't sleeping in the same...

'Wait... that can't be it,' she thought. 'He wouldn't do that just because I wasn't sleeping in the same room as him... Right?"

Her mind steadily became foggy.

He felt so warm pressed against her like this.

'Just this once....' she thought as she curled up closer to him and drifted back to sleep.

Sebastian woke around five a.m. that morning. He was astonished to feel something soft and warm pressed against him, his gloved fingers intertwined into long hair and the tips touching big, pointed ears.

He opened his crimson eyes and looked down to find Maria nestled against his chest. Her legs were tangled in his and her small hands gripped his black button down shirt. Her pelvic region was dangerously against his.
