Spencer was updating my family at the car while I joined Shawn and Gus in the interrogation room. I sat across from Winnie at the table while Bill and Gus were on either side of her.
"We got here as fast as we could." Shawn stated.
"Yeah I'm surprised my car went that fast.
"This is our worst nightmare. It seems like everything is conspiring against us. So we lawyered up. That's how they say it in the bucket, son. Where I did an eight-hour bid." Bill told as Shawn moved to stand beside Gus and me.
"I don't know those words." Winnie told before sobbing. "I'm not gonna do well in prison."
"Don't worry, sweetheart. You'll be fine." Bill told as he wrapped an arm around his wife before mouthing to us so she didn't hear it. "She's not gonna make it."
"I told you, nobody's going to prison." Gus told.
"Also you guys don't need to worry about finding a lawyer. I already called one." I stated.
"Who?" They all asked before my brother burst into the room.
"There was traffic and so I jumped outta the car, and ran like five blocks..... I feel like imma puke my lungs up." Edgar told as he slightly fell into one of the free chairs.
"Him."
"Heya."
"Edgar went to lawyer school and then dropped out when him and his mate Nick realised they hated it, but they did sit for the cat."
"It's called the bar, Ash."
"Why'd you hate it?" Gus asked.
"Lawyers are pricks man. You gonna drink that?" He asked before grabbing the cup of water. "Thanks."
"My older brother everyone." I told with an amused smile.
"Mrs. G, why didn't you tell anybody that Old Man Fuller was blackmailing you for all these years?" Shawn asked.
"We just need to cover your side of the story." I added.
"Besides, the more I know the better it is for me to help."
"I wanted to, believe me, I did, but I couldn't. You see, this all started when Bill's sailboat caught fire. I tried to muster up the courage to tell everybody that it was my fault. But before I could, the insurance company had paid everything off already. Well, somehow, Fuller knew the truth of what had happened. He threatened to turn me in for insurance fraud if I didn't pay him every month. Well, he was so old, I figured paying him off for the rest of his life was the cheapest route." She explained.
"To the police it looks like motive." Gus told.
"It really does Winnie. This is coming from someone who knows how criminals work."
"Yeah, my brother in-law was one. Great guy, still friends. Police see that as enough reason to kill a man. My god this is good water." Edgar told before having some more of it.
"I know. But don't worry, son. We have called Nana. She's to look after you in case anything should happen to the two of us." She told.
"Mom, I don't need my grandmother, who lives in a nursing home to look after me."
"We hear you, son. We hear you. Anyway, it's just until we can raise the money to post your mother's bail and pay our legal bills." Bill stated.
"I can pay. I am a billionaire I think.... I actually don't know how much money I have, other then it's a lot." I told making them smile.
"Same here. Books, movie deals, music, we got rich people problems honestly." Edgar added matching my smile.
"Thank you sweeties but we can't take your money." Winnie told.
'Yeah na. Imma help if I need to.'
"Whatever the cost is, I'll cover it. Don't worry about it." Gus told.
"We appreciate the gesture, Burton. But, son, we're talking real money." Bill told.
"You have a savings account in a penny jar. I have a 401-K, a diversified asset-allocated portfolio full of securities and equity to tap into." He explained.
"He's always been so good with the big words." His mother told before turning to Bill. "How much do you think we can get for the Cutlass, dear?"
As soon as those words were said, Gus finally had an outburst at how his parents were treating him.
"Stop it! I can't take anymore! All of my life it's been 'Gus can't handle this!' 'Protect Gus from that!'. Well, guess what? I'm the most responsible, well-prepared, non-criminal-record-having adult in this room. And it's high time you two stopped babying me. I'm 29-years-old. And by the way, I know you've only been married for 28 years. I did the math a long time ago. So stop protecting me from that. Starting now, I'm gonna take care of you. I'm gonna give you money." He told before he put an arm around Shawn's shoulders and pulled me up to do the same. "And we're gonna solve this case. Shawn may not have always been the best influence on me, but he's always believed in me along with Ash who is one to try and have us be at our best, like having us believe in us or on what our goals are in life, even when I didn't believe in myself. And right now, I believe in them. And even though I haven't know Edgar all that long, I believe in him as well."
"We hear ya, son." Bill told before he walked over to Gus and held his hand out.
Gus took his hands off of our shoulders and gripped his fathers hand for a firm shake.
"Can I just mention. I also don't have a criminal record. I'm just friends with people who do." I told.
"Yeah neither do I. I was just connected through my sister being married to one."
"I'm counting it." He told.
"Ok." We told before Shawn whispered to Gus.
"All right, dude. You had your moment, man. You nailed it. Now go ahead and make a timely exit. Come on, Before you gotta make another speech." He told allowing us to all leave.
"I'll talk more with them and see what we can do." Edgar told making me give him a quick hug as thanks.
Gus closed the door to the interrogation room behind us, before he followed after me and Shawn.
"Spencer at the car?"
"Yeah. And before you ask, I always keep it on me." I told making him give me a kiss before turning to Gus.
"Your mom being arrested might be Christmas miracle we need for the case." He told before we headed up the stairs.
"How so?" Gus asked making us stop.
"I suspect she wasn't the only one in the neighborhood that Old Man Fuller was blackmailing. We gotta get back in his house." Shawn told making us jog up the stairs as Gus followed after us.
We quickly made it to the car to see Spencer just waiting till he saw us.
"Get your gloves on Spencey!" I told confusing him.
"Why?"
"No reason." I told making him look at Shawn and Gus.
"We are breaking into Old Man Fullers house." Shawn told.
"What?!"
"Shush!" The three of us told.
"Why are we doing that?"
"We'll explain on the way." I told before we jumped into the car quickly.
'This'll be fun!'
