I sat at the bar and put my head down on the counter. I banged once, twice, thrice. When it started to hurt I stopped. I hadn't eaten all day, my head was throbbing, none of them were being nice to me even though I told them everything. What was I supposed to do? I looked to my right, then my left then got up, walked to the back of the counter. If no one was going to serve, I'll serve myself. I looked at the bottles as I walked further behind the counter. My foot got caught in something and I fell face down on the cool ground. I turned and sat up, rubbing my head. I looked up to see what exactly when I found my foot caught in blonde hair. No, no, no. This wasn't right. I screamed at the top of my voice.
"What? What's wrong?" . I didn't have to look up to see who it was. "Amelia, what's wrong?" she asked again, angrily.
"It's....it's...Shirley. She's dead" I stammered and burst into tears.
An hour later, I was sitting , face down at a table in the diner/ cafe, whatever. I couldn't get the sight of my dead friend out of my head. I lifted my head and sat up straight. My face was hot, tears streaming down, nose running. I wiped my nose with the back of my sleeve and looked at everyone around me. Maybe I wasn't alone after all. "You okay?" Elena asked, placing her palm on my hand. I pulled back and wiped my face frantically. "Amelia" she began but she stopped, because for no reason I was rumbling. I was talking about Shirley.
"I never liked her, you know. Basically because she tried to steel my scenes. Like, when I won the best student award she told everyone she let me win and made sure people believed her. This project was the boiling point. We were partners and from the very first day I have been cursing when she helped me. She disabled the cameras, got a car, a house to live in and god knows what else" I choked when I tried to speak again. Bonnie ran to the bar and filled a glass of water and rushed back to me. "Thanks" I managed to say. "I just can't forget seeing her lying on the floor, soaked in blood. Head apart from the body, bite marks on her neck, wrists. Her eyes...." I trailed off. I ran to the bar and leaned over the counter, but there was no body, no blood. "Where'd she go?" I asked, turninf around. I scanned the room and then asked again, this time louder. "Where has Damon taken her?"
"Amelia" Stefan began but he didn't look at me and that scared me. I ran out of the bar and stood at the entrance, looking around. Suddenly, an engine roared to life and I saw car emerge and drive away. "Damon!!" I called out but my voice cracked and I started coughing violently. I jogged up to my jeep, climbed in and started the engine. I was out of my parking spot and on the road, following the only headlights I could see before me. I maintained some distance between his car and mine, we were the only two people on the road so it wouldn't be difficult to lose him. He was driving so casually. There was no hurry, he wasn't speeding. He kept turning left, right, right again, then left. I simply followed. The breeze was hitting my face, it felt nice. There weren't any more tears. The only image in my head was the one of Shirley's dead body. I tried shaking the image out of my head but nothing was helping. I could't see headlights anymore. Did I lose Damon? I drove a bit further and then stopped. I parked beside Damon's car and got out. I looked up. Cemetery- it said. What was he doing.....no way! I entered through the gap between the two big gates. I walked and walked till I heard a sound. Click! I stopped and listened. I heard an owl cooo in the distance. Then another Click! I looked around, there was no one. Then I turned and I gasped in fright! "Damon" I breathed out.
"What are you...." he began. Then widened his eyes and said, "you followed me" . I nodded.
"Where is Shirley?" I asked, peeking behind him. Then realized it was stupid. It's not like he was dragging her everywhere he went. "Did you drag her in here?"
"What?!" he asked, offended. "I carried your friend, Amelia"
"You got my name right" I said, surprised.
"Yeah, well. You've had enough for the day" . He turned and started walking. I stood there, clueless. Damon stopped and turned around asking, "You do still wanna bury your friend, right?" . I fell in step beside him and we walked silently. Again, he turned I turned. He suddenly stopped and I dashed him. "We're here" he said, softly and stepped aside. I had to lean forward to look inside the huge hole Damon had dug. "You did all this?" I asked, again, surprised.
"Don't look so surprised". I laughed and then looked inside, the smile completely washed off my face. "You taped her head back?"
"Just placed it so it seemed like that" he replied.
"Good job". I knelt on the mud, not worrying about my jeans, took some dry mud in my palm and threw it in. I stood up and stared. "Uh..Damon, I'm guessing he's gonna do the rest?" I asked pointing at a man dressed in dirty clothes, standing with a shovel.
"Yup" he replied. I didn't move. I nodded when the man asked if he could fill the hole and leave. "Amelia" Damon said softly and then held my hand. Any other day I would've pulled away but at that time it felt right. He squeezed it and then let go. I turned around and we started walking towards the gate. "What about the other guy?" I asked, digging my hands in my pockets.
"He will be going to the forest"
I stopepd in my tracks and asked, "why?"
"We can't have two fresh graves. Tomorrow people will ask questions. And this might surprise you but people of this town are very nosy" . We stopped in front of our cars.
"Can I come?" I asked, meekly.
"Sure" Damon said and got inside his car. I hopped inside my jeep and started the engine and followed him down the road. He stopped and parked at one side, so did I and watched him as he carried the body out and dragged him inside.
"Does he have to be dragged?" . I felt pity for that guy.
"Well, your friend wasn't very light and I'm guessing he isn't either"
"Maybe you need to work out a little more" . He stopped walking and sighed.
"Samelia, please shut up"
"Not again!" I groaned and continued walking. Damon dropped the hand he held to drag the body and lit a matchstick. Before I could run to the other side and stop him, the body was on fire. "What'd you do that for?" I gasped.
"Weren't you listening?" he mimicked me. "The people of this town are nosy" . We started walking but then heard a noise. Leaves were ruffling, crushed under someone's foot. I stopped and moved closer to Damon.
"What the-" Damon began but was interrupted by a werewolf's growl? How could I forget these lurked around here! I was the smart one, after all.
