Brandon's Point of View

I really hate going to these damn upscale charity events; they always want you to donate the most obscene amount of money only to pocket most of it. I guess the plus side is the networking, the chance to expand my business, and make connections with the right people.

I arrived in New York with Natalie to attend the King's Annual Charity Ball. I wasn't shocked to receive the invitation since I had been doing business with King Industries for years. I had heard that Mr. King finally retired, and now his son, Austin King, was the new CEO, running the company.

I'd only met Austin twice, and both encounters had been awkward. He seemed to dislike me for some reason, subtle but noticeable, and while I didn't understand it, I knew I had to maintain our professional partnership.

Getting Natalie to agree to this trip had been a challenge. Things between us were only getting worse, but I still hoped that maybe, just maybe, we could rekindle something, that this trip could bring back what we'd lost. I still loved her despite her faults.

The Ritz-Carlton glittered in the evening light as we stepped out of the sleek black limousine. Natalie's crimson-red Jessica Rabbit-style crystal gown hugged every curve, the heart-shaped strapless bodice accentuating her figure. She adjusted the slight shimmer of the dress, feeling the subtle eyes of passing guests on her. That attention was something she thrived on.

I felt a tightening in my chest. "That dress is too much," I said quietly, trying not to make a scene. "It's... inappropriate for this event. People are going to talk, Natalie."

Natalie stopped and looked at me, her perfectly arched brow raised, the crystal earrings catching the light. "Too much? Brandon, really? You're never satisfied. I wear what I want, and this is exactly how I want to look tonight."

I ran a hand through my hair, frustration bubbling. "I just don't want you embarrassing me, attracting the wrong attention. You know how these events are. Everyone is watching."

Natalie's lips curved into a sharp, sarcastic smile. "Of course. I should just blend into the wallpaper, shouldn't I? You've been trying to control me since the moment we got married. Can't I just enjoy the night without being critiqued every step I take?"

I clenched my jaw, wanting to continue the argument, but I knew any scene here would backfire. I took a deep breath and nodded. "Fine. Let's go. Smile. Be the couple people expect us to be."

Her eyes glittered with annoyance, but she followed me up the grand staircase. My tuxedo straightened, forced calm on my face, the practiced smile in place for the cameras, staff, and guests. Each step felt heavy, the tension between us palpable, yet masked by our façade of a happy, loving couple.

Inside, the ballroom gleamed with crystal chandeliers and polished marble floors. Guests mingled with glasses of champagne, gowns swirling, tuxedos pressed. My mind shifted immediately to business, contacts, opportunities, and deals. The charity was secondary.

Natalie walked close, scanning the crowd, testing boundaries, subtle flirtation in every nod and smile. I watched her carefully, knowing too well how her charm could create problems, how it had before.

Then I saw him, Austin King. Calm, powerful, composed, speaking with high-profile donors near the stage. My chest tightened. I knew Austin from past business dealings, and those brief encounters were enough to remind me that I was stepping into a situation I couldn't fully control.

I guided Natalie toward him, hand brushing hers lightly. "Thanks for having us, Austin. The event looks amazing," I said, smooth, careful.

Natalie's crimson gown shimmered, catching the chandelier light. "Yes, it's beautiful. Thank you for inviting us," she said, polite and controlled.

Austin's eyes met mine first, calm and measured. "Glad you could make it," he said, then nodded toward Danielle, acknowledging our presence without any trace of surprise or hesitation. He maintained his composure, his posture confident, his tone polite but firm, a subtle warning that he was fully aware of who we were.

Danielle stood beside him in her teal crystal mermaid gown, serene and confident, a quiet energy that radiated calm. She was unbothered, fully aware we were here. The past had no grip on her, and it showed. Her poise and composure were a quiet reminder that she had moved on, and nothing we could do would shake her.

Austin introduced us smoothly. "Brandon, Natalie, this is Danielle, my fiancée."

Our eyes met briefly. Danielle didn't flinch, didn't react with bitterness or anger, only a composed smile, calm and unbothered. Her presence reminded me, sharply, of what she had endured and how far she had come. Natalie's practiced composure remained in place, masking the unease that subtly flickered across her face.

The three of us exchanged greetings, polite and measured, each word weighed. Smiles were in place, eyes carefully attentive. The room glittered around us, but beneath the surface, the tension was palpable.

And though the outward façade of civility remained, the silent undercurrent of history, betrayal, and unspoken grudges hovered between us, quiet, waiting, unresolved.

The night's veneer of sophistication and celebration held, but just beneath it, the storm lingered, gathering, inevitable.
