Danielle’s point of view

Storms often come and go, but nothing could have prepared me for the storm I was about to face.

It was our sixth anniversary, Brandon and I. I wanted tonight to be special. Lately, he’d been working longer hours, and the distance between us had grown like a shadow creeping through our marriage. But tonight, I was determined to reignite what we had. I’d spent the day shopping for groceries, candles, and a new dress, determined to remind my husband how much I loved and appreciated him.

But when I pulled into the driveway, my heart skipped. Brandon’s car was already there. He was home early. That rarely happened.

Smiling to myself, I grabbed the bags and hurried inside, imagining surprising him with dinner and maybe something more. I heard a faint noise upstairs, muffled and rhythmic. I brushed it off, assuming he was in the shower. A small part of me felt excited; maybe tonight would finally feel like us again.

I climbed the stairs, my heels clicking softly against the hardwood. But as I got closer to the bedroom, the sounds grew clearer and wrong. The moans weren’t mine.

A cold dread seeped into my skin. My stomach twisted, my pulse quickened. The door was slightly ajar, and with trembling fingers, I pushed it open.

And there it was, the image that would shatter my entire world.

Brandon was thrusting into someone, into her. My best friend, Natalie. The woman I’d laughed with, cried with, and trusted like a sister.

Tears blurred my vision as I watched them, his hands gripping her waist, her head thrown back, their moans tangled together. They didn’t even notice me standing there, frozen in disbelief. I wanted to scream, to run, to unsee it all, but I couldn’t move.

And then I heard it, the words that killed whatever was left of me.
“I love you, Natalie.”
“I love you, too, Brandon.”

My knees buckled. The room spun. My heart felt like it cracked open, spilling everything I’d ever given him onto the floor.

When I finally found my voice, I cleared my throat. They both jerked toward me, eyes wide, faces pale.

“Danielle,” Brandon stammered, “Baby, let me explain. It’s not what it looks like.”

I laughed, a bitter, broken sound. “Oh really? So you weren’t in our bed, screwing my best friend on our anniversary?”

He went silent, searching for words that didn’t exist. Natalie’s face was streaked with tears as she clutched the bedsheet to her chest.

“We didn’t mean for this to happen,” she whispered, “but we love each other.”

I stared at her, the woman I once called my sister. My hands shook, but my voice stayed cold. “You love each other? You mean my husband?”

Brandon sighed, avoiding my eyes. “I was going to tell you, Danielle. I haven’t been happy for a long time. I want a divorce.”

That word hit harder than the betrayal itself, divorce.

Six years of my life, gone. I had given up my career, my dreams, my identity to support his. I’d sacrificed me to build us. And now, he stood there confessing his love to someone else while destroying everything I built.

I walked to the closet, numb, my mind a blur. When I returned, the weight of my handgun felt cold and heavy in my hands. Brandon’s eyes widened. Natalie gasped.

“Get out,” I said quietly.

“Danielle, calm down,” Brandon said, holding up his hands, “Don’t do something you’ll regret.”

“The only thing I regret,” I cut him off, my voice trembling, “is marrying you.”

They scrambled to gather their clothes, stumbling past me. I didn’t move. I just stood there, shaking, watching them disappear out the door, leaving behind the wreckage of my life.

When the silence finally settled, I collapsed onto the floor, my sobs echoing through the empty room. My heart felt like glass, shattered and sharp.

I had done everything right. I’d been loyal, devoted, patient, and for what? To be replaced by the woman I once trusted most.

“God,” I whispered through my tears, “please help me, I don’t know how to go on.”

Outside, thunder cracked, and the storm broke loose, but it was nothing compared to the one raging inside me.
