Danielle's point of view
Two months had passed since realizing my marriage to Brandon was over, since accepting the truth that he no longer loved me and never would. I had finally stopped stalling on the divorce, agreed to most of the terms he wanted with a few minor adjustments, and now we were in court waiting for the judge to finalize the proceedings. My heart was heavy, my chest tight, and my mind kept drifting back to the moments I had desperately tried to bury.
I looked across the courtroom, and there they were, Brandon and Natalie, smiling, looking content, like they hadn't destroyed everything between me and him, like they hadn't shattered my trust. I clenched my hands in my lap, trying to focus on the task at hand.
"Mr. McKinley, please rise," the clerk called, and Brandon got up, straightening his jacket as he approached the witness stand. A police officer met him there with a Bible in hand, "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?"
"I do," Brandon replied, placing his hand on the Bible.
Monique, my lawyer, a fierce and unyielding force, stepped forward, eyes locked on Brandon, a subtle smirk playing on her lips, "Good morning, Mr. McKinley. I'm Monique Lawson, and I will be asking you a few questions on behalf of my client, Danielle McKinley. Are you ready to proceed?"
Brandon nodded, trying to maintain his composure, his jaw tight.
"Mr. McKinley, please state for the court how long your affair with Ms. Natalie Williams has been going on," Monique asked, eyes sharp.
Brandon hesitated, "Over two years."
A murmur ran through the courtroom.
Monique pressed on, "And is it true, Mr. McKinley, that Ms. Williams is now carrying your child?"
"Yes," he admitted, voice low.
The courtroom was silent, every word striking Danielle like a hammer to her chest, the truth laid bare, her mind involuntarily drifting into a flashback, reliving that moment at home, the fear, the heartbreak, the crushing weight of his words, You have to get rid of it, now,
Flashback
Standing in my bathroom, staring at the ticking timer, my heart racing, every thought spinning, I tried to breathe, tried to calm the storm inside. Would Brandon want this baby? Could I do this alone? Am I ready to be a mother? My hands trembled, the timer dinged, and I picked up the test. Pregnant. My mind reeled. I was going to be a mother. Fear and joy twisted together, and I tried to imagine telling him, preparing a dinner, hoping to share the news.
He arrived home, tired, distracted, but I tried to break the ice, "Hey, baby, how was your day? I made dinner, your favorite, steak with asparagus."
Brandon barely looked up from his phone. "Thanks."
I pressed gently, "Anything interesting happen at work today?"
He muttered something about a deal, still scrolling on his phone. I felt the pang of being ignored, of being unseen, and I took a deep breath. "Brandon, we need to talk. I have something important to tell you."
He looked annoyed, "Whatever it is, it can wait. I have things to handle."
"No, Brandon, this is important, listen to me for once. You barely spend any time here. I just want a moment with you."
He scoffed, "Here we go again. Always nagging when I'm trying to work. Somebody has to pay the bills, and you're the one with no job. I don't have time for this."
