Brandon's POV

I leaned against the wall, glass in hand, pretending to be casual. Natalie had excused herself to the restroom, and I followed at a distance, waiting. My eyes couldn't help flicking back toward the ballroom every few seconds,

Danielle had slipped inside the restroom moments ago, and now I was stuck outside, pacing slightly, heart thudding. My mind kept replaying her earlier movements across the floor, the way she laughed with Austin, the effortless confidence in her posture,

I tried to steady my breathing. I couldn't let Natalie see the effect it had on me. I had to focus on her,

Natalie POV – Inside Restroom

Danielle was already there, smoothing her gown, checking her makeup. I stepped inside, forcing a sweet, casual smile.

"Danielle," I said, voice light, measured, "I swear, it's shocking to see you here. Haven't seen you around since the divorce."

She looked up, calm, collected, eyes sharp, "Well, it is my fiancé's event, Natalie. I think it makes sense that I'm here."

I let my eyes roam over her dress, then back to her face, venom laced in my tone, "You really landed on your feet, huh? Divorced, engaged to a millionaire. Some women really do have all the luck."

Danielle's lips curved, polite but icy, "Luck? Natalie, please. Hard work, focus, and knowing my worth. What about you?"

I laughed, leaning slightly closer, my voice dropping, "Oh, just married life, motherhood. Ryleigh is six now and has Brandon wrapped around her finger. I'm sure you remember how he always wanted a little girl."

She turned slowly, eyes cold but unshaken, "Glad to hear that. Sounds like life's treating you well. That's good."

I stepped closer, lowering my voice, "And yet here you are, strutting through the party with him. Must feel good to flaunt it, huh?"

Danielle snapped her head toward me, her tone sharp as a blade, "Flaunt it? Natalie, honey, I'm living. There's a difference. I don't need to prove anything to anyone."

I smirked, leaning on the counter, "Living, huh? And seeing your old life, seeing Brandon here, enjoying himself... must sting a little?"

Her eyes locked on mine, ice and fire, voice deliberate, "I didn't have to cheat, Natalie. I didn't betray anyone. I didn't have to step on anyone to get the life I wanted. That's the difference between you and me."

My jaw tightened, venom creeping, "Easy for you to say. You had him first, then, well, you know the rest."

Danielle laughed softly, not sweet, not friendly, sharp, "Oh, I remember, Natalie. I remember how I carried myself, how I honored my life. What's done is done, and I don't waste energy on bitterness. You might want to try it sometime."

I felt heat rise in my cheeks, fury and shame twisting together, "You think you're untouchable, huh?"

She tilted her head, fierce, unstoppable, "Not untouchable. Aware. I don't need to tear others down to shine. That's called winning without dragging anyone through the mud. Ever heard of it?"

I opened my mouth, tried to fire back, but she was already gliding toward the door, adjusting her clutch, every step dripping confidence, "Keep your shade, Natalie. I'll be over here, living my best life, while you're still worried about the past."

She was gone, her presence still hanging in the room, a quiet, devastating victory, leaving me standing there, seething, humiliated, and fully aware that she ran this room, and that she wasn't even trying.

Brandon POV – Hallway

I was leaning against the wall opposite the restroom door when Danielle stepped out. Our eyes met, my chest tightening, and I froze,

"Danielle—" I started, but my voice caught, my mind blank,

Before I could even gather my courage, Austin appeared, smooth and protective, slipping his arm lightly around her waist,

"There you are," he said warmly, "I was wondering where my fiancée disappeared to."

Danielle shot me a polite, fleeting glance, "Enjoy the rest of your evening, Brandon."

Austin gave a respectful nod, guiding her back to the ballroom. I stayed still, watching them leave, heart racing, feeling every choice I'd ever made pressing down on me,

Brandon & Natalie POV – Outside Restroom / Back in Ballroom

Natalie stepped out a moment later, carefully neutral, hiding the fire beneath. I moved closer, sensing her mood,

"Everything okay?" I asked, voice smooth,

Natalie exhaled, calm on the surface but with tension underneath, "Fine, People can be so perfect, can't they?"

I could feel her jealousy simmering, so I pressed gently, "You're the one I'm here with, that's all that matters tonight."

Her fingers laced through mine tightly, "I just need to know I'm enough,"

"You are," I said, placating, reassuring, "Tonight is ours, no one else matters."

Her gaze flicked once more toward the ballroom, tension beneath her calm exterior, then she gave a small nod,

We walked back into the crowd, arms intertwined, the music swelled, lights glittering above. The storm had passed for now, but the weight of the past lingered, dark and sharp in the corners of my mind.
