Firey didn't skip fourth period. Coiny did though.

...'You know where' I mean, did he really? Maybe it wasn't too late, maybe Firey could still lie and play dumb and everything would be fine. No confrontation, no explaining anything.

...

It's too late for that.

For the first time probably ever, Firey dreaded the bell that would dismiss him for break. But the clock still ticked.

He could just,, not go. He could skip town and only tell Leafy of his whereabouts. He could make her swear on blood oath that she wouldn't tell a soul where he went.

...C'mon.

There's so many things he could do, but he knew out of all those things, all he could really do was face the music. He would meet Coiny, maybe explain everything, or die. He could also die.

No, no. He would face Coiny, explain, promise to never talk to him again if he wanted, apologize with tears-

"Class dismissed."

He hadn't even heard the bell amongst his racing thoughts. He stood, and began to make his way out to the courtyard.

——————————

Coiny stood waiting. He didn't fidget or pace or hum to himself. He stood, facing that ever so quiet door, and waited.

He felt kind of stupid, like some cartoon villain or something. His back was turned to where he wouldn't see when Firey approached him, if he even did. He was listening instead, for dramatic effect.

And he was still angry. Firey had invaded his space, spied on him, and who knows what else all for the sake of... Well okay Coiny couldn't figure out why he'd done it yet, but once Firey got here he would make him explain one way or another.

Tick, tock, tick, tock...

Coiny knew he would be here any moment. He'd be a coward to run away and ignore him like he had been already.

Well, Coiny guessed he hadn't given him much of a chance to not ignore him, but still.

...

There it was. The quiet tip tap tip of those tacky brown boots he always wore. A pause. Coiny didn't turn yet, the steps weren't close enough.

Tap tap tap tap

"...Coiny." Firey swallowed.

Coiny turned and expected the sight of his usually hot headed and aggravated rival, but instead found the boy avoiding eye contact and very obviously drenched in nerves. He almost felt bad.

Almost.

"I'm giving you a minute to give me whatever possible excuse you could have for stalking me. And if your excuse isn't dumb as shit, I want you to tell me how you even found out about this place."

Firey looked genuinely hurt, he knew this was warranted and he knew what he did was bad, but being called a stalker still kinda stung.

"Your time starts now so make it quick." Coiny narrowed his eyes, eyes that still hadn't completely met Firey's since he arrived.

"Oh, uhm okay uhh.. I'm really sorry, I am. I swear I'm not trying to like, blackmail you or anything I-"

"50 seconds."

Firey inhaled. "I-I didn't come here that many times, maybe three or four I don't know. I didn't plan to tell anyone and I wasn't looking for anything incriminating-"

"40 seconds." 'Excuses, excuses. He's a liar."

"I uh, uhm-"

"How'd you find it in the first place? 35 seconds."

Firey was growing more frantic. "It was Monday and I just kinda,, followed you... I know that sounds bad I don't know why I did it and if you never want to talk again that's fine, I'm sorry I've just been-"

"20 seconds."

"AH, UH I've been confused and it has nothing to do with you. God i'm making this about me, bottom line is it won't happen agai-"

"Confused?"

Firey paused. He felt like he was being held at gunpoint, but he finally met Coiny's eyes. He didn't want to loose him, he really didn't. But with how things were going, he might deserve it.

"Me and Leafy aren't dating, I lied because I was scared of what they were saying and, god, that night really started it."

"Started... what?" Firey had lied? For what? So people wouldn't see their rivalry as something else? Why would he care?

Firey looked hesitant. Coiny no longer appeared accusatory, he was apprehensive.

"I... When you said you and Pin....." Firey broke eye contact. "...I've never felt something like this before."

It was only a whisper, but it sent Coiny over the edge. He didn't want to think about what Firey's statement meant. So, to avoid it, he swung.

"You're time's up."
