We rode in silence on our way back to the camp. Despite my best efforts, I wasn't able to avert my attention to the road ahead. My mind was completely focused on Gerard. Could I convince him that our love could be freely shown without any regrets? I felt such a strong attraction to him that I felt I couldn't let whatever we have between us die. We were both reluctant to do what we thought was the right thing despite the clear desirability we felt for each other.
I regretted not stopping Gerard from making the decision for both of us, but there was nothing that I could say that would change this. It was the logical thing to do in the long run. Our families mattered more, but at what point did 'more' finish? Did it mean sacrificing our happiness just for the sake of a peaceful household? I didn't know when to stop myself from asking questions that I didn't know the answers to. Maybe this was the reason that I always had a depressed mindset.
As we pulled up at the stop, the brakes squealing, Gerard turned to me with a sad look in his eyes. He looked as empty as I felt.
"Just... Don't mention anything to Mikey and Ray." He instructed. The words sounded heavy, as if it pained him to say them. He felt the burden of our attraction for each other brought just as much as I did.
"Sure." I replied softly.
I climbed out of the car, hoping for a moment alone at some point this afternoon. I knew this was a long shot; Mikey would be asking me questions about what was wrong with Gerard this morning and Gerard would be wanting to go over the plans that we discussed yesterday. A moments peace was also something that I sacrificed on this mission.
Mikey and Ray must have been gathering items that they'd found from around the area we were staying in. Anything that might have a purpose was in a cardboard box that was originally in the back of the Trans-Am but now sat on the front step of the deserted shop.
Gerard wandered over to the box and began inspecting the items it contained. He held up lengths of rope, drinking containers, workbench tools and some other random items that Ray and Mikey had collected while we had been out kissing on the highway.
"Where are they?" Gerard asked me, his hand moving to block the sun out of his eyes. I shrugged and continued my path to the inside of the shop. I swung the door open and peered my head in, Gerard coming up close behind me. I could feel his chest against my back, a fuchsia blush spread over my cheeks. I felt like a schoolgirl with a crush. Was he doing this purposely?
Turning around quickly so Gerard wouldn't see the colour of my cheeks, I shook my head. "not in there."
"Mikey!" Gerard called out, his hands cupping over his mouth to amplify sound. "Ray!"
I strolled away from Gerard and began searching for Mikey and Ray alone. They couldn't have gone far because we had taken the Trans-Am with us.
The shop, which Gerard was now inside and checking around for the boys, was an aged concrete building that had only one small window besides the one that fitted into the door. It's sign had been taken, probably by Mikey and Ray, and was now only left with the faint outlined memory of the name it once took. By the roofing over the gas pumps that stood on the left hand side of the building, I could tell it used to be a gas station.
Although it was nice being on my own for a brief few seconds, I needed to find Ray and Mikey before Gerard started getting worried. I continued my search around the premises until I found them both behind the concrete structure at the back near the tools shed.
"Where the fuck have you two been?" I asked Ray, my eyes scanning over the scene before me. Ray grinned at me from the doorway of the wooden shed, in his hands he held two large cardboard boxes with familiar logos printed on the side.
