I should tell you

I've started smoking cigarettes

And inhale after inhale

Came an exhale of clouds

Streaming consciousness

And exhale after exhale

I tried to make out the letters of your name through the smoke

I've started smoking strong cigarettes

In hopes that the fire they start in my lungs is lasting enough to burn in an image of you

Into my lungs

My ribs

And inhale after inhale

I crave a higher blaze

And exhale after exhale I look inside myself

To see what of you is left within me

I've started smoking a pack a day

And I've been discarding the ashes in my stomach

On my tongue

In hopes of tasting a little more of you everyday

Inhale after inhale

Licking my lips

Exhale after exhale

Swallowing you whole

I've started smoking stronger cigarettes for the orange amongst the ash

And I've been putting them out on the crevice of my neck right behind my ear

In hopes of leaving your mark visible

And leaving my skin bumpy

To feel you again

Inhale after inhale

Tracing my fingers along your scratches and harsh bites

Exhale after exhale

Reds, whites, and fleshy pinks

Recently

I should tell you

I've started smoking cigarettes

But I've not found one strong enough

One harsh enough

One hot or burning enough

To make me feel that age old high to the tune of your voice

Recently

I should tell you

I've started smoking the strongest god damn cigarettes

The ones the make you cough like coal and burn like gasoline

Recently

I've started smoking you

Caressing you between my lips

And as I breathe you in again

In a second

You're gone

Inhale after inhale

Faces blur but you're so clear

Exhale after exhale

I want a cigarette that burns your name across my chest
