KJ walked up the sidewalk leading to the arts magnet school she had worked at for the past 6 months. Her chunky heels clicking on the cement, and her long, dark hair wisped around her shoulders as she made her way to the door. She scanned her badge and let herself in like she did everyday. Making her way down the hall, soon to be filled with the voices of chattering middle school kids, she felt her phone buzz in her pocket. A message from the teacher she worked for lit up her screen.
"Good morning KJ! Please come down to my office before students arrive, we have a new member to add to the band room and Id like you to meet them!"
KJ was excited at the thought of a new student coming so late in the year. Yellow Ridge Musical Arts school was always scouting for new talent and new ideas to bring into their programs. KJ took a turn down the long corridor and entered the office of Mrs. Sorren, string and song writing coach.
"Mrs. Sorren! When is our new student arriving? Where did we scout them from?" KJ said with a smile.
Mrs. Sorren shook her head.
"Oh, no no, we haven't found any new student, no. Not yet anyway. We have a new staff member. The interest in our guitar program is growing and were going to need an extra set of hands. The new hire is coming in about five minutes. Would you show him around and get him acclimated?"
"Oh... man I was hoping we could get some new kids for the summer song writing program. We haven't had much interest yet, are we even going to be able to put it on this year?"
Mrs. Sorren waved her hands dismissively.
"KJ please, well be FINE! Now go meet our new guitar coach, hell be here any second and we need to make a good impression!"
"Right..."
KJ set down her stuff and set off to retrieve the very important new guitar coach. As she walked back up the still vacant halls she suppressed her frustration with Mrs. Sorren and the lack of concern about her song writing program, but she felt heat flushing across her cheeks. As she came to the top of the ramp at the end of the main hall she saw a slim, wavy haired man waiting silently in the atrium. He stood relaxed, in a pair of worn jeans, a loose, half tucked shirt and boots that looked like they'd tread many miles of mountain.
KJ leaned into the door separating her and the new guitar guy. The door clicked open and the man looked up, almost as if snapped out of a daydream.
"Hello, Im KJ, you must be...uh, Im sorry, Mrs. Sorren didnt tell me your name, shes not great with that..."
"Oh, no worries, Im Jake"
KJ found herself enchanted by his amber colored eyes. They were soft, comforting and warm. Something in her brain clicked.
"Wait... Jake? Jake Kiszka? Josh's brother?!"
