Jake hesitated, his honey hued eyes flickering, searching for a clue on KJ's face. Moments passed, when a light went off in his head.

"KJ... No way!" A toothy grin spread across his face, his eyes sparkling as his memory jogged.

KJ felt the heat creep across her cheeks again. She had forgotten how smitten she was with Jake when they were kids.

"It's been a while, dude, how have you been?"

"Ah, man KJ, its been crazy! Josh, Danny and Sammy, we've been all over the place man."

"Wait, don't tell me your band actually stayed together?"

Jake laughed, it was smooth and familiar. It triggered something in KJ she hadn't felt in many months, she felt lost, and like she found a part of herself in that sound. She shifted her weight and crossed her arms across her chest, an onset of vulnerability sweeping across her body. Jake was still eyeing her with a subtle brightness in his face .He leaned against his guitar case, his other hand resting on his hip.

"Oh, yeah, we just finished a mini tour of the west coast and decided to come back home for a while"

"That's... Jake that's amazing, Im so happy for you guys." I remember you in your garage when we were like, what? Fourteen? Nothing could tear you away from that guitar." KJ paused.

"Some things don't change, huh?" she added, her tone softened.

The glimmer of Jake's expression faded, and his eyes fell to KJs lips, then back to her forest green eyes, heat swelling in his chest.

"No, I guess they don't"

They lingered on each other a bit longer, tracing each others faces with each glance. KJ broke the silence, her voice caught in her throat.

"Well, uh, I s-should show you a-around then, follow me"

As KJ led Jake down the narrow hall she mentally kicked herself for stuttering. She thought she had it under control. She hadn't stuttered since she was in high school.  Jake followed close behind, a fleeting smirk appeared as he thought to himself.

'She's still stuttering... and it's still cute as hell' But he could never convince her of that, at least not then.
