"oh, little echo mouse." luz said, taping on the glass enclosure that the echo mouse had been kept in. "you ate the diary that can get me home. can't you cough up just teeny bit?"

king popped up next to her, "just squeeze it out!" he held a stuffed bear, his arms laid across, his grip got tighter and tighter, and then the head popped off and into the air.

"or," i began, while putting on the jacket part of my school uniform, "you could just be patient."

luz looked over at me and shrugged. "yeah, maybe i just need to be patient." she then began to press her face against the glass like a child at the zoo. "please tell me your secrets." she begged the mouse.

"hey, knuckleheads!" mom opened the door, "you're gonna be late for school."

luz pressed her face deeper into the glass. "i already tried that, she won't budge." i shrugged, walking closer to mom.

"thanks." she answered sarcastically. her hand ruffed my hair a bit. "alright. i guess you won't be getting a magic staff with the rest of your classmates." and with that luz was up, changed and already at the door in less than two minutes.

"come on, guys! we gotta fly!"

"there we go."

"there's the spark of luz."

once we got to hexside, mom flew us to the playing field. most of our classmates were already there. as i scanned over the crowd, i only saw a few people i knew. "hey, willow." luz stated as we took our spots next to gus and willow. "shouldn't amity be here?"

"oh, sorry, luz." willow said, "i heard she stayed home today."

luz's face dropped into a frown, "oh," she giggled nervously, "that actually makes sense."

soon mom and principle bump walked in front of the class. "good tidings on this momentous day." bump started, "you're all about to receive your witches' staffs and, more importantly, meet your palismen. this is a crucial step in your magical development. palismen are lifelong partners. they can become both your good friends and a powerful tool. in my case," bump paused his speech and snapped his finger.

a green, spell-looking buzz glew around his head. long, black, straight hair flew down the principle's body. gasps left the students mouths. it was pretty impressive, but i had seen a few cooler things first hand before. "frewin, here, helps me see."

"now traditionally, young witches carve their staffs from the branch of an old palistrom tree." mom explained.

"but, sadly, palistrom trees are becoming more rare." bump added, "and those that remain are guarded covetously."

mom smirked, "that's why i've teamed up with bumpipoo..."

"never call me that."

"to bring you..." mom's voice trailed off as an old friend of hers flew on top of the nest.

"palismen adoption day!" exclaimed the bat queen.

as the bat queen landed on the nest, the door flew open and about a dozen palismen crawled out of the nesting space. everyone took a few steps closer to the nest to get a good look of what was out and available. there was a wide option of palismen up for adopting.

"these little ones have not had homes in many years." the bat queen began to explain, "they want to feel a connection. kneel and state your deepest wish, and your like-minded partner will find you."

bascha groaned, "ugh, i want my own palismen. not some trashy hand me down!"

"your loss!" willow moved around her and moved to the front of the nest. she carefully got down on her knees as the bat queen instructed. "i want to be strong and wise to protect everyone i love. and if anyone gets in my way, they'll feel the sting of defeat!"
