in the past month and a half, i had fully settled into the owl house. hooty was still as creepy as ever, but i had gotten a bit more used to him. "how we doin', hoot house?" his loud voice interrupted thoughtful silence.

"can ya keep it down?" king shouted back, "down! down!" he heard his voice crack, "why does this keep happening?!" i could tell he was frustrated. i was seated between my brother and my mom. i carefully rubbed king's neck, hoping to calm him down.

hooty stretched to the couch, "sounds like our little demon is becoming a 'de-man'."

"ew." i mumbled.

king grimmest, "ugh! why does that sound so wrong coming from you?"

he was right. it sounded horrendously wrong. "you!" apparently he squeaked again, "i am done with this!" king jumped off the couch and ran off somewhere else. i didn't blame him. i wanted to run too, but hooty moved closer to me.

"don't even." i threatened.

"have you talked to the golden guard recently? have you two sorted out your feelings yet?" i shook my head and stood up.

"nope, not happening!"

hooty started to talk to mom, probably pissing her off too. i ran upstairs. once i made it to luz and i's shared room, i sat on my bed and started to read some more chapters of my book. i had been fortune enough to be able to find demon realm copies of my favorite book series. "i really need hooty to stop ... being hooty." luz said shutting the door behind her.

i nodded. it was the best way to put it. everyone loved hooty, but sometimes he was just too overbearing.

"okay little mouse." luz walked toward the window sill. "if you don't want to tell me about philip or how he made his portal, maybe you can tell me ask out a cotton-candy-haired goddess?"

i chuckled under my breath. of course it was luz and i both in strange eras of love. to be fair, i didn't even know if it was love. all i knew was that it was complicated. "maybe when he helps you with that he can help me."

luz smiled sappily while putting the mouse on the window's ledge. i turned my attention back to my book. "amity's smart, cool, and classy. what about hunter?"

she scarred me slightly, by using his real name. "what about him?" i asked.

"what about him makes you have feelings for him?"

i paused, "I'm not sure." she gave me a look, "well, when he isn't the golden guard, he's really nice. he's shy, but not at all afraid to protect who he cares about. and he truly cares about people when he actually knows them. he's loyal."

"so you are sure." she had a teasing smile.

i rolled my eyes, "you want to ask amity out?" i questioned, deflecting the question.

"yes." she blushed, "but i want it to be breathtaking, emotional, and real! everyone back home said i was cheesy. i don't want her to think the same. does that make sense?"

"perfect sense." i nodded. there was a knock on the door. luz opened the door and picked up a note from the ground. "what is it?"

"as we stumble through life, gloom knows no bounds. you'll only find love when you're in the ground." she groaned, "p.s. i mean the basement. hooty, i don't have time for this!"

"we have a basement?" i asked.

luz shrugged, "you're hate this, but he wrote it to both of us."

"WHAT?!"

as we walked down to the basement, both of us were practically shaking. i wasn't on super good terms with hunter since i left him with kikimora in the woods in latissa. which was only because we hadn't talked since then. "what do you think he's gonna do?" luz asked.
