BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.
Don't you just love waking up so darn early in the morning. Just kidding... I despise it. I reluctantly as the fluorescent light hit my eyes, practically begging me to wake up and get going.
Hi, I'm Sophie Foster. I live in New York with me, myself, and I. I moved away when I was legally allowed to. Don't get me wrong... I love my family. My adoptive parent, Grady and Edaline, and like my biologic parents and I love them with all of my heart. But I decided that when I grow older, or old enough, I wanna be independent.
I don't have much, but I do have a best friend. This best friend is my brother, friend, mentor, and my favorite person in the world. Speaking of which, I should probably get out of bed. I promised to meet him for coffee before we both went to work.
So, with all of the will power I could possibly muster, I got up and moved my body dreadfully towards my closet, picking out what I'm going to wear today.
After dressing myself in a pair of Timberlands, black jeans, a plain white shirt, and a hoodie, I began packing my bag for work. I usually pack a blazer so that I can rip the sweatshirt off and replace it with my blazer, so I look "professional" for work.
I rushed out of the apartment and to the elevator, which I rushed into with a jacket and my bag in my arms. After hailing a taxi, I made it to my destination.
The sign 'Sweet Bean' lit up in the light of early dawn. I walked in and saw Shane sitting on the counter with two stools, so I walked over to him.
"Hiiii." I stretched out, pulling him into a half hug as I set my stuff down. Shane was a musician and got a full scholarship to Julliard, while I was aiming for the real estate field, but I had no idea what college. I still had over two years to think about, so I should be fine. We both work part time jobs in the summer. He sings for sick children at the hospital, and I worked as an intern for Magnolia Sales, a real estate company. Both of our jobs required us to be there at 9, so we mut for coffee every day before we left for work.
"Hey Soph." He responded, returning the half hug as a waitress walked to us.
"What can I get you today?" she asked, grabbing a pen that was tucked behind her ear and pulling a notepad from her back pocket.
"I'll take an iced vanilla mocha and a baguette." I responded.
"I'll take an iced caramel latte and a blueberry muffin." Shane said, pulling his phone out as she left us.
"I don't want school to start again." I said, rather bluntly.
"Why not?" Shane asked, his gaze going from his phone to me.
"Think about it... once school starts, we don't get time to do what we love. Nor will we get to go on these coffee dates anymore. Nor will we be able to have movie nights, or--" I was interrupted when Shane talked over me.
"Okay, okay, I get it. You'll miss summer break. Oh, and also, schedules have been posted. I haven't opened mine yet." Shane added.
Shane and I had this thing where we opened our schedules the same time and hoped that we got the same one.
I took a bite out of my baguette and pulled my phone out.
"Ready," I started.
"Set," Shane said.
"GO." Both of pressed that one button.
"Schedule A." I said, while Shane said, "Schedule C."
"Ugh. That's so unfair." I said, slamming my phone on the wooden table. That turned several heads my way and I sheepishly looked away.
"Hey, no need to have a tantrum, Soph." Shane said, chuckling lightly and patting my arm.
"Who else has your schedule?" He asked.
I peered down to my phone. "Mostly just band kids, art kids, and--ugh--Angelica, this guy named Keefe, and that's about it."
Angelica was my sworn enemy. I despise her, and I was exactly happy that she was on my class's roster.
Shane recited his roster to me. "Some new kids, some athletes, Shelby, and some new kids."
Shelby was one of our close friends. Her and I were close but not best friends. We didn't hang out too often, but she was pretty cool.
After 20 minutes, my phone's alarm went off. "Ugh. Time to go."
We started to gather our things as we hopped off of our chairs. "So... I'm leaving for California the day after tomorrow." Shane said, trying to make it sound as nonchalant as possible.
"I know. When are you coming back?" I asked. He had told me earlier, but I wasn't paying attention.
"The night before school starts." He spoke.
"I'm gonna miss you." I spoke.
"Me too. But... before I go, I have a request." He responded.
"What might that be?"
"My dad is hosting his annual summer party at Torenti's Plaza, and he's letting me bring a plus one. Please, please, please come with me?" He asked.
Shane's father was one of the richest men in New York.
"Ew. That's gross. There'll be a bunch of rich, snobby grown-ups drinking overprized wine."
"Soph, please. Without you, I'm gonna be bored out of my mind."
"No. Absolutely not."
"Please? I promise I'll make it up to you."
"You're really not gonna let this go, are you?"
"Not really." He spoke, grabbing ahold of both of my hands. "Pleaseeee??"
"Fine." I grumbled.
"Yes!" He said, pulling me into a tight hug.
"I'm gonna have to wear a dress, aren't I?"
"Um... yeah. But you can't back out now. You already said yes." He smirked, pulling me into one last hug before both of us parted ways.
