Joseph pulled up to the driveway. He was starting to get paranoid. "What if she left to go see him?" One of the nurses at the hospital had told him that one of Brianna's friends had come to keep her company yesterday when he went to complete the formalities for her discharge. She was obviously smitten by this 'friend' by the way she was smiling as she told him about how he stayed until she fell asleep.
Careful not to sound too irritated, he had simply said "Yes, she does have some great friends." His irritation had grown worse when Brianna didn't say anything about anyone visiting her. And that is how he knew it must have been him.
So, he had decided to leave work early. As he walked up the driveway, he wondered whether Brianna would be home. He slowly turned the handle door and walked in to find her sitting in the sofa, with an almost empty plate on her lap, her phone set up on the table.
"Everything ok?" he asked as he walked towards, taking in the scene in front of him.
"Yes," she answered slightly flustered, "I was just finishing up my lunch. You're home early!"
"Yeh, I thought I'd come check up on you."
"I'm ok. I had ordered some lunch."
Inside, Brianne's heart was racing. Frankie had just ended the call abruptly without saying anything. That was too close and she could not go on like this.
Joseph went to the bedroom to change, wondering why her phone was set up on the table. "I should just ask her," he thought. Just then, his phone rang. Lucy's name appeared on his screen.
"Hello?" he answered softly.
"I thought you were staying in late today, but the receptionist told me you had already left. Are you coming back?"
"I needed to check on Brianna," he answered bluntly.
"Are you coming back to check up on me after?" he could hear the suggestive tone in her voice.
"Lucy, we've talked about this," he said, his patience running short.
"But your hands never match up with your words, Joe. Just this morning you..."
"You don't need to remind me," he interjected. This morning he needed a distraction and she had been there. It didn't mean he wanted a life with her. "Look, I have to go. We can talk about this tomorrow," and he hung up.
Bzzzz. Bzzzz. A picture of Lucy sitting enticingly on his desk, the top three buttons of her shirt opened to reveal her breast cupped in a lacy red bra. A dark contrast on her fair skin.
She was becoming too brazen and he really needed to put an end to this before it got too complicated. But it was so damn hard to resist her. Images of his head between those perky breasts flashed in his mind, and he felt the familiar stirring in his groin.
J: Meet me at the hotel at 6 pm.
He put his phone on silent and went back to the living room, still wearing his office clothes.
"Are you not staying?" Brianna asked as she saw him, still dressed.
"I'm not leaving now, but I have to get back to the office at 6. Have some urgent work that I need to catch up on. I could try and call to push it for tomorrow if you want," knowing that she would never ask him to stay.
"No, don't worry. Can Nicky stay with your mum though? I don't know how I will take care of him with just the one hand. And I'm still a bit sore."
A wave of guilt flowed through him as he remembered she just got out of hospital. "No way to backtrack now," he thought.
