DIANA'S POV

The atmosphere was very quiet and tensed after Kareem's outburst. Even the kids had stopped playing and were all staring at us strangely. Kareem was right to be upset though because since the minute we arrived his family had been at our necks with question after question. They were all normal questions but the way they asked them was in a demeaning manner. It's like they were trying to put us down, but little did they knew we were not going down without a fight.

"I dare you to repeat that question."Kareem spat out the veins on his forehead popping in anger.

I had calmed him down ever since we arrived but asking about Ezekiel had been taking it too far so I was not going to stop him from saying whatever he was about to. Nuru looked confused next to Kareem as she stared up at her uncle wondering what was going on. Jamila was on the verge of tears which made my heart clench in pain for her. Her family was reminding her of her loss and that was not okay.

I got up quietly from my seat and went around Kareem to Nuru. I had to get her away from the line of fire before it all went up in flames.

"Sweetheart why don't you go wait outside in the car, we'll be there soon."I sad handing her the car keys.

We had barely been there thirty minutes and I knew we wouldn't be much longer. Nuru being the bright girl that she was took the keys, got off her chair and left. I sat on the chair she had been occupying and took Jamila's hand in mine offering her wordless comfort.

I had convinced Kareem to come thinking his family had changed but I knew that wasn't the case the minute I met them. They were a very wealthy family in material wealth, but in manners and good conduct they were the scum at the bottom of my heels.

"It's a simple question son and where is Nuru going?"Kadija asked.

"Away from all of you."Kareem replied glancing at Nuru's retreating form before he turned his glare at the rest of his family.

"It's not a simple question and you would know that if you were involved in our lives but oh no, we were too damaged for this prim and proper family. Why did you even invite us here today? To make fun of us and belittle us. Or were you hoping that we were living in the streets so that you can offer us a few scrapes of food and we'd be grateful and beg you to come back?"Kareem asked through gritted teeth.

Half of them looked away because there was some truth to Kareem's words.

"That's what I thought."Kareem scoffed.

"Not that you deserve to know but Ezekiel died five years ago during the Dusit attack, and I've helped raise that beautiful little girl who just left. I don't do drugs anymore but it's not because you kicked us out and forced me to be better, it's because I needed to be a role model for Nuru since she didn't have her father to look upto anymore. Yes Jamila doesn't have a nine to five job but she's happy and is able to provide for her family. I'm happy too in case you're curious, I make good money working at a job I love and I'm dating the most beautiful woman in existence so screw you and your expectations. We don't need you or your approval to live our lives."Kareem yelled his voice filled with so much emotion even I was holding back tears.

"Diana talked me into coming today because she had faith you had changed but oh how wrong she was. You're still the same conceited family you were eight years ago. Actually I'm glad you kicked us out, otherwise I hate to think of how we would have turned out to be like you. You think we are the disgrace but all of you are the disgrace to this society."Kareem added sounding softer but with a lot of disappointment laden in his voice.

"Okay that's enough Kareem, sit down."Emir demanded.

"No can do old man, I'm not nineteen anymore so you can't order me around like you used to. Baby, Jamila, get up, it's time to go."Kareem requested.
