she was inquired about the "socials", and harry explained that each house had a small party of sorts in their common rooms the day before classes began to welcome all of the new students and catch up with old friends. If alcohol was going to be involved, hiraeth definitely couldn't count on herself to behave.
"yes, well. i received a letter from my parents. suggesting that i attend the social with the Slytherin house. they have full intentions of having me wed Draco after graduation." she announced to Fred and the few remaining people sitting at the table, put off her breakfast at the thought of having no choice on who she was to marry when she grew. the idea of her marrying Draco didn't completely put her off. but that doesn't mean she nessecerally wanted to marry her childhood best friend. Fred scoffed, waving his hand dismissively.
"well i'd advise you throw that letter out and join us anyways. you weren't even here for the last social. you can't miss out on your last one ever!" he said. hiraeth chuckled, seeming convinced.
she heard a fearful gulp from Neville across the table. All of her new friends' eyes were cast down at their plates. she turned on the bench and behind her stood Professor Snape.
"Is there a reason you aren't dining with Draco, like the letter your parents had sent you advised you do?" Snape asked.
her eyes darted past his towering form, landing on Draco. He was snickering to the fat kid beside him.
"Uh..." she hummed, "it completely slipped my mind to check the owlery this morning, sir." she said, quite genuinely.
Laughter bubbled up out of the twins' throats and Neville's eyes grew wide. The professor's expression didn't change, but she could tell that he was by no means convinced by her excuse.
"you where absent for dinner last night, and didn't collect your new uniform." he said flatly, no tone or sign of emotion in his voice. He plopped two pairs of full uniforms down in her lap. Blouses, skirts, vests, robes, socks, the whole lot.
"I highly suggest you choose your friends wisely, Whitlock. you're already skating on exceptionally thin ice."
With that, he started toward the table parallel to all the others, where the Slytherins sat. His eyes stayed on her, though, along with another pair that burned a hole in her back.
"I guess I'll take these up to my room." she said, hands full of garments. "Do me a favour and stick a banana nut muffin in my mouth."
Again, more snickering, but Fred obliged.
Fred watched as she collected her belongings, mentally disconnected from the conversations ensuing around him. He noticed that her shirt had ridden up on her torso, exposing the smooth skin beneath. When she turned her back to him, the dimples on the small of her back just barely peeking out from above her school skirt.
"Guess you haven't given up tea then, huh, Fred?" willow asked, ripping him out of the kaleidoscope of wonders he'd worked himself into.

Hogwarts uniform was a gaudy, ugly thing — skirt stopping just past the knee, blouse swallowing her up. If there was one thing the female percentage of students were grateful for, it was household spells. In just a few seconds, the skirt was hemmed up to her liking. she took in the blouse and tucked it in at the dip of her waist, opting for a pair of sheer black tights over the thick knee high socks that she'd been provided with.
This she could work with.
as the day drew on the student body could see that this year was going to be unlike others at Hogwarts. Defence Against the Dark Arts had become a complete and utter farce, with Ministry toad Dolores Umbridge gate-crashing any chance of them learning anything decent. At least the lessons they'd had last year with an utter maniac had taught them something- this year it seemed all they'd be learning was how to obey fatuous rules. hiraeth dealt with this as best she could- head down, pretending to read quietly. Umbridge was the sort of person whose bigotry was undetectable until it was blinding.
it was the last lesson of the day, hiraeth had a free period and had chose to spend her time in the beauty that was the Hogwarts library. a moment for her to rest her mind was nice. fortunately, Draco also had a free period and knew just the place to find her. he rarely saw her at school. so it was a blessing for the two of them to have some time together. she heard a few brief heel clicks and then felt a presence looming over, assuming it to be Professor Snape. When her eyes flicked from her book, she was pleasantly surprised to see a head full of blonde hair instead.
"Stop spying on me, creep." she chuckled lightly.
"Spying??" Draco straightened the prefect pin on his collar. "I'm Slytherin's prefect. It's my job to spy on Hogwarts' latest mysterious student." he wiggled his brows as he said the last sentence, taking a seat next to you.
"A cute little pin doesn't change what that really means — you're the class snitch." she leaned towards him, poking the pin and pushing it into his clavicle. The skin beneath Draco's shirt was left burning from her touch. she hesitated to move her hand away, straightening out a small wrinkle in his collar beforehand.
he emitted a breathy laugh, leaning back in his seat "i see the Gryffindor's have finally realised you exist." he muttered, throwing his head back to stare at the ceiling. she hummed in response.
It wasn't quite time for the socials to begin yet. No, those only ever really got started after the professors went to bed. Not that they didn't know what went on the day before classes started. Hell, the gendered charms blocking staircases and hallways always seemed to be suspiciously faulty during events like this. Still — more students were filing out of the hallways and heading up to their dorms to get ready for the evening.
"Will you be at the Slytherin house social tonight?" He asked.
Finally, she closed her book and replied, "I'll be wherever the booze is."
"well lucky for you, Slytherin always has the best alcohol." he nudged her shoulder. "your parents would also be happy to hear you decided to attend." he attempted to convince her. and it was working. she stood, collecting her book and quill.
"ill think about it."
as she walked off, he couldn't be distracted from the fact that she had altered her uniform. This was no surprise, most girls past year two began altering their clothes, but Draco thought that the skirt and white blouse fit her exceptionally well.
