"Clyde stop it!" You squeal as he sprays you with the ice cold water from the hose.

"Never!'" He shouts back, continuing to chase you around the backyard.

It was a typical blistering hot summers day in West Virginia and you and your best friend Clyde Logan were playing in the backyard trying to cool down while the both of your parents sat inside chatting and fixing lunch. You couldn't remember a day of your life without Clyde. Your parents had been best friends since before the two of you were born and from the moment you met you've been inseparable. People in town called you 'Bonnie and Clyde' because of your closeness, as well as your constant getting in trouble together. There wasn't a day that went by that you didn't have fun or create some kind of ruckus for your parents to clean up afterwards.

"Clyde! Y/N! Lunch!" Your mom calls from the back door.

The two of you sprint to the house, your mom shouting at you to get a towel and that you're tracking water into the house. You and Clyde giggle as you dry off and sit down to eat...

You miss those days now. The pure joy that you had when spending time with Clyde was something you haven't felt since then. The older you got, the closer you became and romantic feelings between the two of you started to bubble up. You talked about it with him, the two of you keeping no secrets, but ultimately decided to stay friends, petrified of ruining your friendship. It was so hard for you to watch Clyde date, the same for him but you forbid yourself from bringing it up again. You went to college and Clyde decided to go into the military, and it was the hardest day of your life when you had to say goodbye...

"Please don't leave me," You whisper into his shoulder, tears streaming down your face.

"I wish I could stay. I don't want to leave you," He says into your hair, hugging you tighter.

"I love you Clyde," You say, refusing to let go.

"I love you too sweetheart," He says quietly, trying his hardest to hold himself together.

You whimper, shoulders shaking as you begin to sob again. Clyde takes a deep breath, collecting himself.

Stay strong for me, okay? I'll come back to you, I promise," He says.

"You swear?" You say, looking up at him through tear filled eyes.

"On my life," He says, brushing hair out of your face.

He kisses your forehead, lingering there for a moment before grabbing his things and getting on the bus.

It's been over two years since you've seen him. You wrote back and forth all of the time in the first several months of his deployment but lately you've been struggling to find time to write him as you advance in college and your workload has increased. It tears you apart thinking about Clyde believing you've forgotten about him because you haven't. You think about him every single day from the second you wake up until right before you fall asleep at night. It's torture not being able to talk to him but you are so busy, you can't find the time. But it helps knowing how supportive Clyde always was about you going to college and be always pushed you to get your degree. It was something you always talked about as kids and he loved seeing you work towards your dream. It was just another day filled with classes and homework when your mom calls you as you're sitting in your apartment doing work.

"Hey momma," You say.

"Honey? Where are you?" She asks, the tone of her voice sounding frantic.

Your mind immediately goes to Clyde.

"Home. Momma what's going on? Did something happen to Clyde?" You say, your throat starting to close.

"Baby there was an accident. Clyde was involved and that's all we know," She says, her voice cracking.

Your ears start to ring and your eyes grow wide. You claw at your chest as your lungs feel like they're gonna collapse.

"Are you there? I'm coming to get you and we're going to the Logan's," She says, but it sounds as if she's a million miles away.

You suck in breaths but your chest still burns as a knot grows in it. You barely hear your mom shouting your name over and over through the phone but your grip grows weak and it clatters to the ground, shattering. Bile burns your throat and your stomach flips but you are cemented to your seat. Tears you didn't even notice were falling splash onto your homework on the table as you begin to hyperventilate.

Clyde...

Clyde...

Clyde is dead...

Clyde is dead...

A voice keeps repeating in your head. Suddenly you feel a pair of hands on your shoulders and your mom is behind you, shaking you.

"Honey? It's mom, breathe, take deep breaths," She says through her own fear.

"I--I can't br--breathe," You wheeze, your hands and feet tingling with pins and needles.

"Shh," She says.

Your hands are wrapped so tightly around your mom's wrists that your knuckles are turning white.

"W--What's w--wrong with me--me?" You gasp.

"You're having a panic attack. Try your hardest to breathe," Your mom says, squeezing your shoulders.

You crumble, screaming sobs into your mother's chest as she holds you, stroking her hair. You can feel her shaking with her own tears as she cries with you, her heart shattering for you and for the boy who was like her son. She stays with you until you come down from your panic attack, but your still dazed, feeling like you aren't in your own body. Your arms and legs are heavy and feel like they aren't a part of you. Your tears stained cheeks are itchy, but you can't raise your hand to itch them. Your mom gets you into your car and you are moving through the familiar route to the Logan's house. You vaguely remember Mr. Logan saying they're flying him back to the states but his condition is unknown. Mrs. Logan is completely inconsolable, sobbing and wailing in sorrow, wrecking your heart. You stare through the window into their backyard, remembering that hot summer day all those years ago, wanting nothing more than to be chased with cold water by your best friend...
