As you sit in the dark, you're fuming, your skin literally rippling, hot with anger. You're sitting in a chair at your kitchen table, eyes glued to the door and your phone in your hand, gripping it so tightly that you're afraid it will break. For the sixth night in a row, Daniel is late. Not just a couple of minutes, but hours late and you're done. After years of being alone, being told he'd be home, only to fall asleep by yourself and wake up to him gone again, the forced and sworn secrecy, and you truly feel that your relationship with Daniel was over the minute he started working for the FBI. Your muscles stiffen as you hear the front door handle jiggle and Daniel walks in, trying to be as quiet as possible. He kicks his shoes off, hangs up his jacket, and holds his bag close to him, ready to go upstairs and lock it in the safe he has in your bedroom but he stops in his tracks when he sees you.

"Hey, baby. What are you doing awake?" He says, walking toward you.

You bite your tongue, afraid of what you'll say.

"Are you okay? You look tense." He says, reaching out to touch your thigh.

"Don't." You seeth, jumping out of the chair.

There is a look of shock on Daniel's face.

"What--What is going on? Is everything okay?" He says.

"No. Things are very far from okay Daniel. Do you want to explain to me why for the sixth night in a row, you are hours late?" You say, shaking with anger.

"Baby--" He starts but you quickly cut him off.

"Stop. Don't you 'baby' me. If you know that you're going to be late, why not just tell me! Why make me get my hopes up every night that I'll be able to fall asleep next to you for the first time in what feels like forever! I can't do this anymore Daniel. I can't." You say, pushing past him to go upstairs and begin packing your things but he grabs your arm.

You fight against him but his large hand grips you like a vise and he doesn't budge.

"What are you talking about? Where did this come from?" He asks, his eyes becoming wild with fear.

You finally tear your arm from his grasp and his eyes dart back and forth over you quickly.

"This isn't a fucking random idea Daniel. You seriously can't think of why I feel like this? For the past five years, I've been alone. You're always working, every single hour or every single day and I can't even fucking remember the last time we even had a meaningful conversation. I know that this is what you want and what you love to do but it's clearly more important than I am because you can't even come home on time." You say, trying to force away the tears that are burning at the back of your eyes.

His mouth hangs open slightly with shock and you can see the gears turning in his head.

"Daniel I love you. I love you more than anyone I've ever loved before but I can't live like this anymore. The secrecy is just too much, and I know there's nothing you can do about it but it's exhausting. I want to talk to you, I want to sit down and watch a movie, I want to eat dinner together,  I just want to be able to fall asleep in your arms again." You say, hot tears now rolling down your face, your rage melting into heartbreak.

Daniel quickly pulls you into his much larger frame, stroking your hair as you sob into his chest. You don't have the strength to fight him and pull away, his touch that you've been deprived of feeling too wonderful to move.

"We're so close to being done." He says quietly.

"You've been saying that for so long." You whimper, tears still falling down your face in waterfalls.

"I know and I'm so sorry, but this time it's for real." He says.

"Daniel I can't." You say, trying to push him away but he holds you tightly.

"Please. Please just, wait." He whispers, his voice wavering.

He gently takes your face in his hands and strokes your cheeks softly with his thumbs.

"Please." He says, his voice barely above a whisper.

You close your eyes, more tears sliding down your face as you melt into the touch of his warm hands, your hands wrapping around his wrists. He wipes away your tears and picks you up and carries you upstairs silently and to your room, placing you gently on the bed as he disappears into your bathroom where you hear the bath turn on. He comes back into the room, shrugging off his suit jacket, loosening and removing his tie, then unbuttoning his white shirt. You go to take your sweatshirt off but he stops you.

"Let me." He says quietly, kissing your cheek.

He grabs the hem of your sweatshirt and pulls it over your head, then working on your leggings, pulling them down your legs and discarding the on the floor with your sweatshirt. There is no sexual tension between the two of you, just Daniel taking care of you, the Daniel that you miss. He removes his own slacks and extends his hand to take you to the bathroom. You take it and follow him and Daniel turns off the bath, the warm water steaming up the room. He strokes your cheek with his thumb before he reaches behind you to undo your bra and you let it fall down your shoulders onto the bathroom floor. You take off your underwear then he removes his and you step into the warm bath where Daniel pulls you into him, your back pressed to his chest and his long arms wrapped around you.

"Relax." He whispers into your ear, feeling the stiffness and tension in your body.

You close your eyes and lay your head back on his shoulder, letting your muscles loosen and you sigh at the feeling. It's quiet for a while, Daniel's thumb rubbing circles into your thigh as you relish in the moment. This is everything that you've ever wanted for years, to be in Daniel's arms for more than half a second, and to talk to him more than just a passing hello.

"We're releasing it tomorrow." He says, breaking the silence.

"Hm?" You say, too enveloped in the moment.

"My report. We're releasing it tomorrow. We're finished." He says.

You quickly turn around to face him, your eyes boring into his.

"For real?" You ask, searching for any hint of uncertainty in his eyes.

"For real." He says a small smile playing on his lips.

Your lip quivers and tears spring in your eyes again as you fling your arms around him, splashing water all over the floor in the process.

"You're done for real. You did it." You cry into his shoulder.

"I did. Thank you for standing by me, and for trusting me." He says, squeezing you tightly.

Your speechless, knowing that you have the love of your life back, for real.
