"Hey!" You smile, running toward Charlie and hugging him tightly as he exits his plane terminal.

"Hey." He says, squeezing you back.

"How was the flight?" You ask.

"Not bad. Glad to be here." He says.

You both find his bags, get them loaded into your car, then head to your apartment. You and Charlie have been friends for a long time, meeting each other at a conference for directors a couple years back. When he told you that he was coming to California for a bit and needed some where to stay, you didn't hesitate to offer up your place. You knew that him and Nicole were going through a divorce so you wanted to make things as simple as possible for him.

"Nice place you got here Birdy." He says as you pull up to your place.

"I can't believe you still call me that." You laugh.

"It was the first thing that I noticed when I met you." He says, referring to the giant bird that was on your sweater when you met each other.

"You're something else." You laugh as you help him get his things out of your car.

You head inside, letting Charlie put away his things as you make dinner for the both of you.

"I can take the couch if you want!" You call to him as you're making dinner.

"No you're not! You're already letting me stay here so I get the couch!" He calls from the bedroom.

"What ever you say!" You chuckle.

"This looks great." He says as you hand him a plate.

"Enjoy." You say.

You both eat in silence for a bit, both of you starving from the long day until Charlie clears his throat.

"How has California been treating you?" He asks.

"Really well actually. I've had some really amazing job opportunities and met a lot of really amazing people." You say.

"I'm so glad. You always talked about how it was your dream to come here." He says.

You catch a glimpse of sadness in his eyes but it's gone as soon as it appeared.

"You know Charlie, I think you'd really like it here. Companies would be dying to have you direct their stuff." You say, taking a long sip of your wine and already knowing what his answer is going to be.

"New York is my home Birdy. It always has been and always will be." He says.

"I know, I know, but I would love having you here. And you'd be closer to Henry." You say.

"Who said Henry is going to live here?" He says, getting defensive.

"Well I wasn't sure since Nicole seemed pretty adamant that--" You start but he cuts you off.

"I don't care what Nicole wants! New York is where Henry was born and raised. It is his home and it's her home too but she doesn't seem to remember that! Over my dead body will Henry live here!" He shouts.

"Okay Charlie, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you upset." You say, feeling horrible for making him mad.

He runs his hands over his face and through his hair.

"I think I'm just going to take a shower and head to bed. Thanks for dinner." He says, standing up, pushing his chair in, and disappearing down the hallway.

"Damn it." You say, resting your head in your hands.

You get up and start to clean up from dinner, mumbling to yourself about how stupid it was to push him like that. You know that he's going through something so unbelievably difficult and you should have been there for him.

"So stupid. So insensitive." You whisper.

You jump when you hear Charlie right behind you.

"Let me help." He says quietly.

You glance up at him and your breath hitches in your throat. His dark, raven hair is still wet from his shower, his white t-shirt framing his built torso perfectly, his grey sweatpants sitting perfectly on his hips, and not to mention he smells amazing. You can't believe you've noticed how handsome his is before. You wash dishes in silence and you try to sneak glances at Charlie, his lips pressed into a thin line as he thinks intensely. You finish the dishes, a heavy silence still hanging between the two of you.

"I'm going to hop in the shower." You say quietly.

He nods and starts putting the clean dishes away. You hop in the shower, sighing heavily and melting into the warm water. You start to formulate an apology for Charlie, whispering it to yourself as you finish up your shower. You hop out, wrapping a fluffy towel around yourself and heading to your room to get dressed. You peak into the living room as you go to your bed room to find Charlie, fast asleep on the couch in what looks like a very uncomfortable position. You sigh again, realizing you'll have to wait until tomorrow to apologize to him. You put your pajama's on and climb into bed, wanting nothing more than to fall asleep and get this day behind you. You're startled when you hear your door open and you turn around to find Charlie standing in the doorway.

"You need a comfier couch." He says, rubbing his neck.

You smile and chuckle lightly, then patting the space in the bed next to you. He walks over, climbing under the covers and laying down. The both of you are laying on your backs, staring at the ceiling with a considerable amount of space in between the two of you. You take a deep breath and decide it's now or never,

"I'm so sorry Charlie. It was so messed up for me to bring that all up. I can't even imagine how hard it is." You say quietly.

"It's okay. I overreacted a bit, so I'm sorry for getting so upset with you." He says.

"It's okay." You respond.

A weight feels like it has been lifted off of your chest and you can breathe again.

"Birdy?" Charlie asks quietly.

"Yeah." You respond.

"Have you ever wondered what life would be like if...if it were different?" He says.

You're confused and taken off guard.

"What do you mean?" You ask.

"Like if, if we had made different choices. Met different people. Loved different people." He says.

Your heart flutters with anticipation.

"Yeah." You respond simply, being completely honest.

"Where would we be?" He asks.

"I don't know. I know where I'd want to be." You say.

You jump when you feel Charlie's hand brushing yours, then his fingers interlacing with yours as you both continue to stare at the ceiling.

"Me too." He says quietly.

A/N: i'm actually really proud of this one...
